Age problems in maths can be solved easily by combining all the information into a single equation and then solving. Lots of examples here too. No trick here - just step by step on how to solve.

I done it mentally right now in 20 sec. ! Now Bob is 8 years old and Adam 36, in 6 years they will have respective 14 & because 14●3=42 ;) ~> with a equation will be so:
*A+28+B=3B+6+A+6* ~>
—2B=A—A+12—28 ~>
—2B=—16 ~> B=16/2 ; today
*B=8* ; *A=8+28=36*

Thank you for the concise and effective lesson. I always had difficult times with solving this kind of questions in GRE / GMAT.

By reading the question...we should let Bob' s age as x and Adam's age as x + 28
Then, (x+28) +6 = 3( x +6)
x + 34 = 3x +18
3x-x = 34-18
2x = 16
x = 8
Adam's age now = 28 + 8= 36
Only my suggestion. Tq

Here's an alternative way, using the fact that "three times as old as" is the same as "two times older than":
The age difference (28 years) doesn't change, so in 6 years Bob has to add twice his age to his own to reach Adams age.
Or he could still add 28 years, so:
2*(Bob+6)=28 --> Bob+6=14 --> Bob=8.
Since Adam=Bob+28, then Adam=36.

"Sorry about the kookaburra in the background" - now there's something I didn't expect to hear in a maths video. Great explanation by the way!

I prefer to do these as two different equations with x and y and then use substitution.

Bob passed away, and Adam went onto a longer life. Common sense.

Hey isn’t Adam’s age now meaning (x + 6) which is 36 + 6 = 42

In Adams Equation you deducted 28 from Bob but in Carls Equation you added 12 to Carls age, both equation mention of being them old then why the difference in building that equation ?

A = B + 28
A + 6 = 3 ( B + 6 )
( B + 28 ) + 6 = 3 ( B + 6 )
B + 34 = 3B + 18
2B = 16
B = 8
Adam is 36, and Bob is 8.
In 6 years, Adam is 42, and Bob is 14.

This reminds me of that old Abbott and Costello routine:

- You’re 40 years old and theres a girl that’s 10 years old. You’re four times as old as that girl
- you wait five years. By that time the girl’s 15 and you’re 45. You’re only three times as old as that girl.
- you wait 15 years and the girl is 30, you’re at 60. You’re twice as old as the girl.
- How long do you have to wait until you and that girl are the same age?
😂😂😂👍

I could never do these questions growing up, it wasn't really an issue about the maths, it was the badly worded written questions. In the last question, Dave is half the age of Carl, but we multiple Dave by 2, doesn't that make Dave twice as old as Carl instead?
