The Canon 6D Mark II in 2024 (PROS and CONS)

The Canon 6D Mark II in 2024. Today we'll go through the pros and cons and do a quick review of this camera.

Earlier this year I made a video about why you shouldn't buy the Canon 6D Mark II. Most of my reasons for not buying this camera in 2023 were because there are currently a lot of cameras on the market that are similar to the 6D Mark II, yet they aren't as expensive.

A few weeks after the video was released people started leaving comments to defend the 6D Mark II. However, I wasn't bashing this camera. I love the 6DM2! I use it all the time as my main camera for both photography and videography. It's a great camera with a lot of features I really enjoy, BUT that doesn't mean it's the best option. Canon now makes cameras like the RP, R10, and R50, all of which have features very similar to the 6D Mark II, but are cheaper.

So, that's the main reason why I would deter people from buying this camera. It's not because I hate it because if I did I would've sold it a long time ago. Instead, it's because if you're a new photographer or videographer and you want to save some money, but still get the same features as the 6DM2 then there are other Canon cameras out there. So, if you're considering the Canon 6D Mark II then I suggest watching this video.

Thanks for watching and always remember to capture great moments!

Jake, glad to see you aren't a 6D Mk II hater like so many on YouTube. I've owned and used one since they first came out. I'm very pleased with the image quality and capabilities of the camera. I've used or tested several other cameras (both Canon and Nikon, DSLRs and mirrorless) and I always conclude that the 6D Mk II image quality is as good or better than any other camera I have tested it against. The focus system is basically the same as an 80D (which I also own). This is a good thing because it is very accurate and reliable. I have noticed the dynamic range isn't quite as good as some other cameras, but if you don't need extreme limits and expose properly, this camera is more than adequate. Great color rendition and very nice handling quality with an amazing touch screen also make this a very enjoyable camera to use. It's been said this is basically an 80D with a full frame sensor. That's pretty accurate and a good thing because the 80D is a great camera as well.

I don't shoot video, so I couldn't care less that it doesn't have 4K. It has great handling, outstanding focusing and very nice image capture. That's what I care about. Plus, it's a DSLR. I much prefer an optical viewfinder. But that's just me - old school I guess. I don't foresee ever selling this camera.

I have both the 6D Mark II and RP. I love both and use them equally. The 6D is used more for macro photography while the RP is for casual street photography. I do occasionally will swap and just take the 6D out with an EF 40mm pancake lens for casual street photography. That said, I prefer to shoot with the 6D over the RP because I have large hands. I prefer the normal VF on the 6D over the EVF of the RP. Great video on the Pro's and Cons of the 6D mk II. I will have to agree with you on all fronts.

For me the biggest plus of the 6Dii is its form factor and weight. If you want a full frame camera for travel it is the best choice. On paper there might not be a big difference to the 5D iv (which I have and love, too), but in reality there is, if you are carrying your camera the whole day. I have two of them, and they have never let me down (till now). Soon I will buy a third one and just shelf it because it is the last one of its kind.

As for IBIS, I am not aware of any Canon DSLR has that feature. For me it's not too big of a deal. Great video. Cheers!

The LCD screen is the thing that made me choose the 6D Mark ii over the 5D Mark IV

Great camera. Quality is enough to do LITERALLY anything you want. Except big prints, which depend medium format cameras. Some people do wedding with 6dmkII, some do astrophoto, some do commercial portrait, even fashion. In studio this camera is a beast

A flip out LCD is mandatory for me on any camera now and I exploited its full value from the minute I got my hands on a Canon 60D years ago. I shot the eclipse this spring and stood in my driveway with my 6DMk2 on a Slik 700DX for 4 hours using the flip out screen to frame images at intervals of 10 to 15 minutes. No more angle finders and the like.

I’ve been tempted to splurge on a new personal camera (Fuji)… but am coming here to hype myself about the Canon 6DII that I already own 😂 I do love the camera and realized I haven’t used it for personal photography yet. Might not be the prettiest hobby cam compared to the Fuji x series, but I’m gonna try to practice carrying this around with a pancake lens so I can get back into personal photography again. I’ve missed it. Your vid was a good reminder it’s already a great camera to own 😭

Honestly I think the card slot doesn’t matter to much as you can easily get high capacity cards, unless you want to be sure that you don’t loose them.

Would you consider the 6d markII an upgrade from a crop sensor canon 77d Getting a 6d used seems more in my price range but don’t want to make a bad choice. Family photography only

The Canon EOS RP was effectively a hasty replacement to the 6D Mark II when Canon was falling behind in the mirrorless race and the EOS R is an almost perfect analogue to the 5D Mark IV. There are certainly some benefits to the RP but more than a few downsides as well. The cheaper price tag is a good reason to pick one up, but if you're adapting EF glass, it's almost worth it to just pick the 6D Mark II instead.

The 6D Mark II was my first semi-professional camera followed soon after by the 5D Mark IV. I love the 6D and have no plans on selling it ever and in fact I may just do what another commenter said and pick up another one in the future to shelve just to have.

Looking at this in October 23.
If I had the funds, would be going Canon RF, but retiring from work, and Canon's closed, though maybe opening system, makes the L RF glass and Sigma EF Art primes that I have just too expensive.
Have a 6D and remain happy with it, though with the advances in AF, it is a little dated.
So it seems is the 6D Mk 2 ! To overcome the IAF shortcomings of my excellent 6D, will probably keep it, as know the easy to navigate menu system pretty well and have some favourite combos saved as custom settings, purchased a mint a6400 + several Sigma primes, the one I use the most being the excellent 56 1, 4- problem solved.
Yes, it's a pity the Mk 2 doesn't have a joystick, however I have used bodies with and without joysticks for some time and can live with one.
Same applies for video. Basically, I don 't shoot video- period.
The main attraction, certainly now that excellent condition bodies are available at much reduced prices, is the touch screen. Should assist with the otherwise disappointing, not ""neutral"" mark down.
Am not a pixel peeper, so issues involving dynamic range are not a problem to me.
Perhaps, above all else is the fact that I have invested, quite heavily, in top quality Canon L series zooms, several primes and some Sigma Art EF primes. There is no way I could repeat this glass quality in mirrorless, even if Canon opens up the RF system.
Will probably, retain my 6D and keep, say, the L 70--200 2, 8 permanently attached, as I don't shoot long, as often as I shoot wide.
Yes, if I had the money, would go Canon mirrorless, but am not a pixel peeper, no longer shoot sport, and the M2 burst rate and all round skills is all I need.

Can you create a video on what best settings you use on the Canon 6D Mark II? I'm a total noob and have been using my iPhone to capture video and it does an amazing job but I want to venture out and use my camera instead. I have a weebill S gimbal, rode boom mic and pretty much a few bells and whistles I picked up along the way but lack some experience and would love to learn more. Thanks.

It's a bit of a bummer that they decided to do without a second card slot, headphone jack and the joystick, especially considering my 7d2 has all of those, more and better spread AF points and a bonus flash. Prior to getting my 7D Mark II a couple of months ago, I had never used a joystick and never knew I needed one. Now I can't live without it. I do miss the articulated screen from my 60D.
The 6D Mark II is still a cool camera but I just can't justify its pricing on the used market today, compared to brand new mirrorless FF bodies. I tend to see them around 700 euros used here and I'd rather just outright buy a Z5 at that point or finance something else. The 7d2, on the other hand, is a ridiculously good bargain at 250-300 Euros.
