Mary Jane Watson was originally created as a character that really stood out from everyone else in Peter’s friend group. Dating for fun, confident, bold, smart.
The personality was modern at the time, but then became standard in media as time went on. I think reinventing this new personality not only works as a character, but gives the same “stands out” impact as the original personality did in her debut

Kirsten Dunst. She added a layer of depth and complexity to the character. She struggled with an abusive father which translated into her dating bad boys like flash. She struggled with her acting career which forced her to work demeaning jobs to make ends meat. Nothing against zendaya but her character just displayed awkwardness and came off as a smart alec.

I love you they didn’t doll up zendaya’s face with makeup, that would’ve thrown off fans so much with her character. Idk if this was on purpose but the lines under her eyes were a lot more defined than any other movie she’s been in

Michelle Jones is more sarcastic and and a bit of a Savage which I like about her as a character she is a lot of fun to watch I think the best love interest is Gwen Stacy you know she actually helps Peter and Gwen just have a a great a very cute

I don’t like the new MJ. For one she looks like she rolled straight out of bed and put her shoes on and left and don’t really care for the personality of the new MJ. Her personality seems flat and a bit depressing. I prefer the old version of MJ that had more of a bubbly personality….that’s just my opinion

I liked Kirsten more as "traditional" MJ. Zendaya played a cool character however I think it has almost nothing to do with MJ.

I think both Kristen Dunst and Zendaya both portray MJ perfectly in their own way. MJ's character from the comic books is a very complex character that goes through a lot of growth. In the beginning, MJ is seen as a popular party girl who doesn't like to be tied down. Once Gwen Stacey was killed by the Green Goblin, MJ's character began to change from the party scene to a more down to earth in some ways. If you really want to see a version of MJ that reallys takes inspiration directly from the comics, check out the Spectular Spider-Man tv show. In the end, I think both actresses have brought MJ's character alive on the screen in ways that fits each movie's theme and I like how Marvel decided to go a different direction when it came to desigining Zendaya's MJ for new Spider-Man films.
