Looks like this needs to be updated. In Big Sur there is not 'Options' next to Photos when looking at the iCloud settings.

Just EXCELLENT!! I just an enormous amount of time trying to download my next episode out of icloud on my Iphone X...Yikes-with no success. You just explained it in less than 3 minutes. All I can say is one word -A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! Thank You! S.R. Ridley, A Nurse You Can Trust!

And when you download photos from iCloud Photo library, they all have a new creation date of today. How can we get our photos out of iCloud and preserve their metadata -- at LEAST the creation date (date we took the photograph)?
I can't believe how lamely this was designed by all-seeing Apple.

I used the 2nd method because the 1st wouldn't work for some reason. Thank you very much for this wonderful vid!
I think I hate Apple more than MS after this iCloud scam.
No way to treat customers Apple.

Thank you! A little old, but this still helped. EDIT: Actually... was hoping to add to my photos app, not just my computer. "Photos" app on mac is just grayed out when I try to download any pictures... can't you just open Photos and access iCloud from there? Seems not... lame.

Note, that if you download your photos in big batches example 1000, the photos will be downloaded as low res. If you want them as originals you have to do them in much smaller batches

Ah....what a clever trap Apple has laid out for us all! To get your photos "off" iCloud you have to upload ALL your photos including those not already there - essentially, a two way sync....but to do so, you need to have enough space in your iCloud account....and therein lies the trap. It is very likely that the sync will require you to BUY space from Apple when in many cases, the whole exercise is to get your content OFF Apple's iCloud permanently. Sorry folks....it appears that once you upload a photo to iCloud Apple pretty much owns it....hence the reason there is no "select all" option (a pretty fundamental functionality) on the iCloud website to allow a full download of all images. You screwed us again Apple!

After the photos are downloaded, is it safe to delete your pictures from your icloud?

Looking to store them so I can free some space up on the cloud.

Why do I not have an option button next to photos?!

this is slightly off topic but can you move the apple photo library to icloud drive? i have thousands of photos in another library and i don't want them to sync across to all devices but i do want them backed up online as well as on an external hardrive.

Because adding a "save as" option seemed too easy
