We get 12 miles node to node with the meshtastic setup we are using here in AK. My BIL went radio systems autistic a few years ago when a quake took out the only road into and out of town, as well as knocking out cell service for hours. We live 11 miles apart and the ability to just check in is nice.

So much wrong with every point this guy is attempting to make. 100x the cost and it ‘might’ have better range… guess what, the antennas can be upgraded, repeaters can be used, etc, etc., his points are moot! He had a flat tire before he even got going!

I can get 5+ miles between my meshtastic nodes, ground level. Once i mount my repeater up my neigbors grain tower 50' up, and then another one about 10 miles away on my county's HAM repeater 235' up, I'll have 25+ mile range between hops.

Open source with a stubby antenna at 50 each vs closed source, better antenna, 700+ each...

I think the advantage goes to meshtastic still for the low cost (Beartooth stuff is ridiculously expensive by comparison) and ability to extend range through installing cheap solar powered repeaters. The Beartooth stuff looks nice and the range is superior but cost of entry is way too high, like giraffe tits high.

For the price of 2 beartooth radios on a heavy discount, you could set up a 14 node meshtastic network to cover 70 square miles…… (I get about 3 miles node-node out of mine)

did you know meshtastic has been tested at ranges of dozens of km's andy kirby has done several range tests. and if you were serious all one would have to do is hang a few devices around to increase the mesh range if you are finding the range to be lacking. and get this. you can do it for way less then the beartooth.

On an actual perspective, I have both and regret the beartooth immensely, price, performance, adaptability, COMMUNITY SUPPORT. The meshtastic far exceeds the target goal. Throw them everywhere, I have nodes I forget about, only to see it ping its location when i get within 10 miles.

I recommend the Rak devices over the ESP32 ones. Battery life is significantly better and Bluetooth has better connectivity/stays connected further from the device.

Learning a new tech is half the fun... however i can understand a casual user wanting a turn key option

the bear tooth is a full blown high end radio where as meshtastic is a budget friendly distributed radio network that can work in a area that is already saturated by other radio signals

Beartooth is obviously objectively better. But the cost is 2 orders of magnitude. Also the meshtastic is completely open source allowing the community to innovate and tinker. We should also always be weary of the trustworthiness of proprietary technology.
