How often do you clean and sharpen your pruning tools? Probably not as often as you should! The fear of getting it wrong and making matters worse might be holding you back, but let me reassure you that it's quick, easy and satisfying. In this video, I show you how to release clogged springs, remove rust and restore a sharp cutting edge to garden snips and secateurs. All you need is a Crean Mate rust and sap eraser, a sharpening stone, camellia oil and a cloth or kitchen towel.

Close-ups give you an idea of how to angle your sharpening stone to get a clean edge.

Thanks for making the video. I believe the narrower, slightly concave side of the Niwaki stones is used for sharpening their secateurs as it's shaped to follow the rounded profile and the flat side of the stone is for straighter edges such as the snips. You'll eventually lose the concave edge of your stone if you continue to use it on flat edges. The convex edge of the stone is used to sharpen the thinner bypass part of the secateurs.
