How to Grow Thin Fine Hair Long and Healthy

These are my personal tips on how to grow thin and fine hair long and healthy. Growing very thin hair long can be a challenge and I wanted to share what I have learned over the years through trial and error. And a heads up, I'm not a professional hairstylist. I mentioned that I take Vital Proteins but I am now trying out a different collagen supplement that I will review in an upcoming video.

I am 70 years old and my hair is about waist-length in the back, a bit shorter in the front as I trim it myself by pulling the back forward. Lucky you to have dark hair, it always looks like more hair! Mine is light to medium golden brown, with some grey. My hair feels and looks thicker and is stronger since I drastically cut back on shampoo and use no chemicals, conditioners, etc. I rinse my hair well in the shower but only use shampoo every 2-6 months. Every night I brush it with a natural bristle brush, all the way from scalp to ends, carefully. This leaves my hair looking and feeling a little greasy, but by morning it has all soaked in or something! And my hair has more body at the scalp and no more tangles! I think the oil regulates itself after a time if we stop stripping our hair of the natural oil. In my experience it took 2-3 months to find a balance so don't give up too soon. I too use collagen protein, the same one. I am sometimes tempted to bob my hair to my shoulders, but I also don't want to look like every other 70-year-old. Nice video, thanks.

I have fine wavy hair that has become thin due to low ferritin. As of next month, I have not trimmed it in 23 years, and it is down to my hip bones if I pull it fully straight. I keep my ends healthy by conditioning them, so I don't need to trim. This is what I do...first of all, my hair can go 5 days between washing without looking dirty, or, 7 days, if I use a boar bristle brush daily, and clean that brush between uses by spraying it with white vinegar and then massaging that into the bristles and rinsing with water, then toweling the brush and leaving it to air dry. I dry finger detangle my hair instead of using a detangling brush. I also keep a spray bottle of 1 part apple cider vinegar to 4-5 parts water, with a few drops of essential oil to cover the vinegar smell. I spray my hair with this in sections and allow it to air dry, then boar bristle brush (it works best to then brush it upside down if this makes it look too flat). This helps hair stay clean longer, and is gentler than more frequent washing.

When I wash my hair, I use an all-natural shampoo followed by an apple cider vinegar rinse (I use 4 oz acv diluted in 16 oz of water) and then I condition my ends. I also seal my ends with jojoba oil when I get out of the shower (I think that a mixture of aloe era and jojoba might be better, though), to help seal in moisture (I scrunch out excess water first). After that, I wrap my hair in a tee-shirt towel for 10 minutes, then let it down and allow it to air dry fully before I do anything else with it, apart from fixing my part by gently flopping locks over to the other side of my head if they landed on the wrong side when I took the towel off of my head.

I never use heat on my hair, I've never used any kind of chemicals on it either. I am always careful not to use hot water on my hair, I always think, "If it were a plant, would water this hot cook it?" and that way, I'm sure not to cook my hair.

Another good idea to prevent breakage is to wear hair in protective styles that tuck the ends away. And to not use hair elastics, which can cause breakage. I usually use hair sticks or a hair fork, though sink scrunchies are highly recommended.

I combined the Wavy Girl Method and historical hair care methods to come up with what works best for my hair. I started using the Wavy Girl Method in 2021, at which time my hair was elbow length and had never grown past my elbows in my life. Now, less than 3 years later, it's almost long enough to sit on! So my methods definitely have worked well to help prevent breakage and shedding. I used to brush my hair way too much, with a detangling brush, and also I used to brush it when it was still partly wet. I didn't used to do anything but brush it and wash it, now it's more work but I've finally gotten my hair as long as I've wanted it since I was a little girl.

You may be interested to watch Katherine Sewing's hair care videos. She is currently doing a February challenge. I've learned a lot from her channel as well as articles on using the Wavy Girl Method.

I hope my tips are helpful!

I have long thin fine hair 😊 I use Nature Bounty Hair Skin and Nail vitamins 4 capsules daily. Brush my hair gently upside down every evening, use silk pillow case, and use WET brush! I wash my hair 2x weekly.. I use Redken Volume injection S & C and Kenra Volume S & C.. I use Coconut oil on my mid length 30 minutes before washing hair, microfiber towels…

You can put extra virgin coconut oil on your hair but only apply a tiny amount of it on ends and mids and wait at least for 13 hours before washing your hair or more. Coconut oil can restore the lipide layer on your hair but it takes time.
Replacement of coconut oil: macadamia, shea, cocoa, olive, palm and avocado oil

Thanks so much for this. Your hair looks amazing. I've always had thin hair but it's gotten so much worse recently and I'll follow these tips. On the diet issue, I realised I was maybe half the recommended amount of protein a day (0.8-1g of protein per kilo of body weight a day) because the only meat I like is fish. If you don't eat eggs or dairy, you have to eat Quorn, soy products and quinoa which are the only full vegetarian sources of protein. Even nuts aren't full protein unless you combine them with other food like brown bread with peanut butter. If you can't eat these then meat may he the way to go.

I have very similar hair! A couple years ago it was at its thinnest and most damaged. I have been working with a functional physician on healing an autoimmune condition, and I can tell that my diet and holistic medical interventions are helping. One thing that I have found very helpful is making a collagen rich broth using a pressure cooker. Might not be for everyone, but I can observe the difference inside and out as my body heals.

I am what they once called a Stringy Texas Blonde. No matter what people say, It's not oil, it's the humidity. I won't put coconut oil in my hair either...except for one time. My feet were sore and I was rubbing them with coconut oil. I rubbed what was left of the oil on my legs but that didn't get rid of it. I wiped what was left, off on the tips, the last one or two inches of my hair. That year, my hair did not have one split end.

Your hair is beautiful! It doesn't even look thin. It may feel that way too when the weight of the hair pulls it down. Henna and indigo usually thickens my hair like CRAZY!! I don't know if you've ever tried it before. It can be a bit drying if it doesn't have the correct ingredients added (honey, coconut oil, homemade flaxseed gel, etc.).

Finally, coconut is sooo bad for my thin hair! My hair falled out by washing it out! 😮

My hair is thin, but super curly and dry. So I do use coconut oil, but only from my neck down. I need all that deep condition because of my crazy curly dryness. I feel like I'm in a weird spot, because I want to do so many of those pretty long up dos to protect, but my thinness makes those look so weird😆

I have grown out my fine hair, but I have fine thick hair, so my strands are fine, but I have a lot of hair, I was able to grow it to my mid back, longest I ever had it, because I used to bleach my hair a lot, I would say fine hair does not do good with bleach, bleach is horrible for fine hair.

When I grew out my hair it was blond, I died it dark brown, but my natural is light ash blonde, so I wanted to go completely natural, and decided to bleach my hair so my roots didn’t look odd shading dark brown hair. Sadly my thick fine long hair got destroyed by the bleach, it was thin dry and damaged, so I cut my hair to neck length. So far it’s taking a while sadly, but I haven’t touched my hair with bleach and I will never dye or bleach my hair again. So far my hair has grown in between neck and shoulder length, my roots against my blonde was bothering me so I dyed my grown out blond to my roots color. My hair feels a lot healthier, but I still have that dry damaged blonde, I’m slowly trimming it away, only literally 1cm and plan on doing this maybe once a month. I’m trying to get rid of that old bland hair. So wish me luck! And cheers to being natural again 🎉

Very informative video! My hair is nearly identical to yours in texture and density so i feel i can truly apply this information and have good results. I just purchased the oil drops 🥰 Any recommendations for a silk or satin pillowcase brand that you like? Also, what shampoo and conditioner do you use? It seems to leave your hair looking very light and lustrous. Thanks! 🙏
