PROS and CONS of living in NEW ZEALAND (Auckland) 2022

If you are new to our channel, HELLO! Thanks for watching our video.

We are Renata, Josh, and Gaia a Kiwi/English family, living in Auckland, New Zealand. Josh and I have always had a love for travel, and we did a lot of travelling together before having Gaia in 2020 (when the world shut down for a bit).

With our borders being closed for the past two years, we haven't travelled with Gaia as much as we imagined, so in May 2022 we quit our jobs to pursuit our dream of full time travel with our toddler. It is only a few days now until we are getting on our first long haul (10.5 hour) flight to start that adventure.

If you'd like to hear more about our plans, you can check out these two videos:

Josh & I are both probably a bit biased towards New Zealand, as we absolutely love this country, and feel very lucky to live here. We know that not all kiwi's have the same experience of living in New Zealand, and this is just our personal opinion on what the big pros and cons are.

We hope that you enjoy this video anyway, and that it shares some insight on what living in NZ is really like. If you do enjoy it, please make sure you click the SUBSCRIBE button, and give this video a thumbs up so we know what kind of videos to make in future.

THANKS FOR WATCHING!

I lived in Auckland for 2.5 years and just recently returned to Australia. I have to say, I agree with most of your opinions.

I'm a kiwi and I agree in last 6mths we've seen a massive hike up in food petrol rents etc.We have fewer people and that's why our prices are a bit higher than other countries, however fewer people means more room for us who live here. I'd never change our way of life its all we kiwis know, but wages must reflect what's going on in the real world.

I'm glad that I saw this video. I have never been to NZ at all but many of my mates say that it is the place where I should live being the kind of person that I am (into the outdoors, hates people, loves isolation, etc...)
I first came to Australia on a working holiday visa from the US, and now an Australian permanent resident - meaning I can also live and work in NZ as a permanent resident too via the Trans-Tasman Mutual Agreement. I'll be moving to the UK and Ireland for a few years before moving to NZ, and honestly, I hope the cost of living standards in NZ get better by then. Your video gives me hope!

Agreed that produce is expensive, but cucumbers and tomatoes are both out of season right now. It's mid winter.

Free health care? I have lived in Auckland for 45 years.. every Doctors visit at the moment costs $55 for 15 minutes. If you don't have expensive medical insurance and you need a hip or knee replacement you could be in pain for 2 to 3 years on a waiting list.

Totally agree about living costs in NZ! Especially in Auckland. After living in Europe and Australia NZ definitely stands out above the others. It’s hard being so far away from the rest of the world. But we definitely get the perks too. How beautiful is NZ?!

Stocks extended their year-to-date rally following the CPI report, with the S&P 500 last up 0.8% in afternoon trading. but I don't know if stocks will quickly rebound for a few weeks, .I am under pressure to grow my reserve of $250k.

Move out of Auckland. Lots of other beautiful cheaper towns to live in right on the beach or by a mountain. I've done a few videos but yes the houses are freezing lol

I keep hearing how expensive NZ is and how the US is so much more affordable. Most of the prices you mentioned (perhaps aside from fuel) are pretty much on par with the MIDDLE of the US, and there are FAR more expensive places to be. Very helpful and interesting; thanks.

I pretty much agree with everything, but...NZ is expensive, but with fresh food it pays to eat seasonally. Growers raise tomatoes all year round, but this often requires heated glass houses, which makes them expensive. Eat fresh tomatoes in summer when they are maybe $2.50 a kilo, and use tinned ones in winter. Houses are expensive, but Auckland is super expensive. You can buy a real up-market house in Dunedin for the average Auckland cost. Good news for buyers is how house prices are trending down in some places.

My ultimate goal in life is to return to New Zealand some day full time.. I was born and raised in Canada and lived in NZ for a year in 2015-2016 and fell in love. The scenery and weather absolutely cannot be beaten.

Where NZ falls short in my opinion is the cost of living. If you're someone with ALOT of money/savings or are highly educated then NZ is a no brainer. However if you're an average Joe it's really hard to justify the move. Coming from Canada In my time there I found I gave up ALOT when it came to consumables and quality of life. I could afford a lot more in the sense of a home / car / clothes etc in my country Canada. Things cost literally double in NZ and the wages are probably half.
