Many of the large countries in Europe had a defense alliance2. There were two alliances involved. On June 28, 1914, the Archduke of Austria, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated. Austria-Hungary threatened war on Serbia. Germany sided with Austria-Hungary and Russia sided with Serbia. On July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared War on Serbia. German troops marched to France on August 4, 1914
