Let’s talk about the best nutrient for autoimmune conditions. This information is based on an interesting protocol developed by Dr. Coimbra.

According to Dr. Coimbra, “all or nearly all patients with an autoimmune disease have an increased resistance to the effects of vitamin D.”

So, someone with an autoimmune disease may have not only a deficiency of vitamin D but also a resistance to vitamin D. This means that to raise the vitamin D levels in patients with an autoimmune condition, they may require a much higher dose than the average person without an autoimmune disorder.

In general, the medical health care system recommends taking only 600 IU of vitamin D per day. However, other credible sources discuss taking at least 10,000 IU of vitamin D with no risks.

The chemistry of vitamin D is very similar to steroid hormones. With an autoimmune condition, your immune system is out of control and is attacking itself. But, one of the incredible functions of vitamin D is its ability to act as an immune regulator. Vitamin D can also help reduce inflammation, which is common in autoimmune conditions.

The more resistant you are to vitamin D, the higher your risk is for autoimmune disease and other conditions.

Other potential causes of resistance to vitamin D:
• Vitamin D polymorphism
• Darker skin
• Metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance
• Obesity
• Age
• A lack of vitamin D in the diet
• A lack of sun exposure

Keep in mind that it’s very important to find a doctor that is experienced with the Coimbra protocol to work with you while doing the protocol.

This protocol determines the vitamin D dosage by measuring your parathyroid hormone. The goal of this protocol is to drop your parathyroid hormone into the lower level of the normal range.

The amount of vitamin D that someone would take could range from 40,000 IU per day to 200,000 IU per day. To minimize the main potential side effect of this protocol (hypercalcemia), you would want to avoid calcium and drink 2.5 liters of fluid per day.

Contact a doctor who is experienced in the Coimbra protocol to get started.

As an autoimmune patient, totally agree with this. I’ve had a battle with my doctors here in Canada when I stopped the chemo in 2020. I was very sick, and mostly steroids allow me to move and breath again, but it cause lots of side effects, and the other medication even worse. I changed my diet radically, and incremented D3, complex B, C, and Magnesium. Today in remission for over 2 years. Thank you Dr Berg 🙏🏻

Back when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, my rheumatologist started me on 49, 000 UT of D3 and Omega 3 for 90 days. I now have zero symptoms ❤❤❤❤

My son was diagnosed with Crohn’s when he was 11. I put him on this protocol 4 months ago. We just had an upper and lower GI. Everything came back great. Biopsies are negative. He’s gained 15 pounds and his stomach pain is minimal. To say I am indebted to you for this information is an understatement. God bless you, Dr.!!

One thing no one ever says is Vit. D is fat soluble. I worked outside every day for 6 years. I took 50, 000 IU of vit. D daily, I always tested deficient. Recently a young lady taking my blood said, You need to take some kind of oil like olive, Avacado or coconut oil when taking Vit. D. Since I started doing that, I feel a huge difference in ability to think again.

I have Hashimoto thyroid disease and in 2019 I developed eczema, because of your videos I started using 10, 000 IU of vitamin D and it has kept me from having flare ups, anytime I’ve tried to take a little less D I would within days have the eczema back. I tried going gluten free and it had no effect on the eczema. Thank you for your helpful videos!

I had stage 4 cancer and beat it. I was fairly healthy based on standard measures but not really (obviously). I changed a lot of things. I increased my vit D to 20k daily. I also take triple vit K along with it. After 5 years of this plus my regular multiple plus 1tbl daily of cod liver oil, I show no signs of sickness or toxicity from the D. And even though I used to get kidney stones pre cancer, on my new routine I have had no problems.

My mom had a Vitamin D deficiency for years and didn't know it until a few years ago. Her calcium levels were also believed to have been low for an extended time, which led to soft bones (unsure if low calcium was related to low Vitamin D levels over time). She devoted her life to servitude as a Nurse. Just over a year ago she got out of the car, twisted her foot on a rock, and broke it. She had to have surgery and the doctors could not even get the screws to go into her bone because of how soft it was. Only ten days after surgery, she died suddenly at 58 YOA of what is believed to have been a blood clot that went to her lung(s). I was visiting her only three days before her death and she asked me to rub her feet with a warm cloth due to low circulation. This was a very unusual request from her, but I am thankful for that moment because it was the last time I saw or talked to her.

DrBerg, I have Hashimotos and my body does not process vitamin D very well. If I up the dosage to 10, 000 I start loosing hair in chunks. If I back of on the D, then my hair stops falling out. This is SO FRUSTRATING. I also live in Alaska. Thank you for your videos🙂

Update, Not that anyone cares but I started using liquid vitamins and that makes a HUGE difference ❤️❤️

Dr. Berg is so awesome. My daughter had a Vitamin D loss and then had 2 major trauma events. They thought it was something else and gave her drugs; the bad type of drugs that made everything worse. And they told her to stay out of the through a couple months of pulling her out of college, seeing a dietician instead, we are boosting the vitamin D a LOT. She's coming back to herself.

I recently had blood work done. They refused to check my vitamin D level. After telling them multiple times to be sure to check my Vitamin D AND ALSO my magnesium, they STILL didn't. And to boot, the doctor took up much of my time and her trying to convince me to begin a "high cholesterol" medication. (Even though everything showed up great - my liver, kidneys, etc.) I really wish I would have asked her "How much do you get paid for me going on your dangerous medicine?"

Dr. Berg should author a book titled
“The Human Body Owners Manual”! Almost all my knowledge of nutrition has come from you Eric! I’ve been applying it and my life has been improving. My better half and I have lost over 60 pounds and feel fantastic, doing clean keto and intermittent fasting has completely changed our lives. Thank you for being You!

Just so people know as he has mentioned in other videos, for every 10, 000 ius of vit D3, you must take at least 100mcgs of K2 (mk7) so that the calcium is deposited in the bones and not arteries/organs… it goes in the right place 😊

Years ago i got off prednisone and started getting a ton of sun at the advice of a dermatologist. Yes a derm said "get a ton of sun!" I completely quit all processed foods. My autoimmune diseases vanished. I am 49 and still get a ton of sun, no sunscreen, and look just as good as other ppl my age and in most cases much better because of my diet and exercise. My arms have some of the little white spots from so much sun but it's way better than lichen planus, arthritis, colitis, and hives.

My mom used to have this rare disease called dermatomyositis. It was quite awful, she had lots of pain in her joints, weak muscles (heart included) and other unpleasant symptoms. After years of taking steroids and fighting with it conventionally she started taking huge doses of Vit D. It took approximately 1, 5 years for her to fully recover and at the age of 76 (after 20 years of struggle) her doctor told her (quite surprised) she was completely fine and no longer suffering from this autoimmune disease… I might add that not a single doctor throughout those 20 years ever told her or even remotely suggested she should supplement Vitamin D. It was our own idea to increase levels of this particular vitamin due to Covid and also because we read a lot how it can be beneficial in any kind of autoimmune diseases…

It's definitely a no brainer. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos at 25. Had several miscarriages. Had a hysterectomy due to endometriosis and fibroid. Lost my job as a Fire Lieutenant wen I started having chronic pain, short term memory loss, and muscle weakness. Was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and ME/CFS, and 3 years later diagnosed with Lupus. I now have a mass growing at the Parotid Gland. I o this Thursday for a biopsy. I'm nervous but determined to overcome the war within my body.
I'm writing, painting and do photography. Art has been a saving grace for me. I'm now in the process of forgiving my body and realise that I need to take responsibility for the things I've put my body through, which entails forgiving myself. Every day is a new day. A day to change what we can. A day to be grateful for the blessings in our life, despite the inner battles.
Thank you Dr. BERG! You've been a huge help to me!

So glad to see a doctor inform others about this!! I was extremely deficient in vitamin d and was diagnosed with MS in 2018... I started reading on ways to fight it naturally because the MS meds weren't good for me. I read about the protocol and immediately began taking 50, 000 iu 3x per week (with many of the supplements suggested) I also went to an whole food plant based lifestyle. I've been keeping up with it on my own because my doctors won't even discuss the protocol with me 🥴. happy to say that since 2019 I haven't had any progression!! even tho I'm doing really well, I do plan to travel to a doc who would help monitor me so Im able to follow the protocol correctly.
