If you're making & selling handmade crafts, one thing to research before you start is whether it's actually *legal* to sell what you plan to create. Attorney Rob Freund, who specializes in e-commerce and social media marketing, is here to help us break down the basics of intellectual property law - including copyright & trademarks. We are going over various common scenarios and questions I see asked frequently by Etsy sellers and in online maker communities. Thanks @robertfreundlaw for joining us to share your expertise!

Thank you for watching! Rob & I tried to cover as many aspects as we could about intellectual property, but obviously we weren't able to cover everything under the sun. I based the conversation around the *most* commonly asked questions I see all the time online. Please try to stick to topics mentioned in *this* video here in the comments. If there's high enough interest (re: lots of views) I will ask if he's able to return for Part II. Rob is a busy practicing attorney, and I am so grateful he was able to lend us his time at all. Make sure to follow him on social media, as he shares a lot of great insight for his followers.

So glad you had Rob on! This makes things much more clear as to the risks you take on in making derivative stuff etc. Appreciate you providing this content!

Great information ❤ I typically email the pattern company and ask them directly. Simplicity and McCalks has been very helpful ❤

Very informative. Most of my questions were answered. Only question I have for a later time is what about expired copyrights. How do those work.

Etsy deactivated a couple of my fabrics I was selling per Nickelodeon. I didn't understand that. I sell supplies in that shop and I purchase my fabrics from wholesale.

This is helpful, I'm curious about things like accessories. For example iPhones, where they use "Fits iPhone 13" or something like that in the title, as its impossible to find non-Apple products otherwise. Are accessories protected from copyright issues?

So basically I should NOT buy any licensed fabric if I ever sell. Thank you

In printing. Had local comic artist who had or was working for DC (knew his name) come in the shop. Wanted to have prints of his art. For any reasons I didn't ask. Being it was Teen Titans characters a DC IP. I was like nope can't print them. Artist came in next day and had different employee print it.

Soooo..Chevy, Ford n Dodge r also brands. But its not an issue with them for decades in refurbishing vehicles n reselling them.
Bought a 70 Chevelle SS for $700 in 1985 then fixed it up n sold it for $50, 000. Why can't I not buy Disney Items..fix them up n resell them or alter then onto something else?
