Well 99.9% of the money for textbooks goes to evil publishers and not actually the authors so it's actually a moral imperative to pirate them to send a message that pay walls need to be deleted and knowledge should be shared freely.

this debate always opens old wounds because it reminds me of the heated debates id have with my ex over this. he was very much ‘if it’s illegal it is wrong, if it’s legal, it is right’. no room for nuance or, in my opinion, actual morals. used to drive me insane

Morality, ethics, and the law can sometimes be three different and opposing things

"I'm a law abiding citizen" is an appeal to authority logical fallacy. That doesn't necessarily mean the authority is wrong, but bypassing logical reasoning makes it a fallacy. If someone abides by the law, and the law is immoral, then being law abiding makes them both an immoral person and a person the law will not punish.
