US vetoes UN call for withdrawal of Trump's Jerusalem decision

The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution that called for the reversal of President Trump's recent recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
All the council's 14 other members voted in favor of the motion, which was put forward by Egypt.
It also called for the U.S. to withdraw plans to put its embassy in Jerusalem.
The U.S. ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, defended the decision.

"We do it with no joy, but we do it with no reluctance. The fact that this veto is being done in defense of American sovereignty and in defense of America's role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us; it should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the Security Council."

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said he expected the U.S. to veto the draft resolution, but added it was important to see the other members united in their opposition to the move.
