A US resolution urging a ceasefire in Gaza linked to a hostage deal is vetoed by Russia and China in the UN security council, extending a five-month impasse in the UN over the Israel-Hamas war. Eleven council members voted for the resolution on Friday morning; Russia, China and Algeria voted against and Guyana abstained. As Russia and China are permanent members their votes counted as vetoes. Before the vote, the Russian envoy pointed out that the US had vetoed four earlier resolutions calling for a ceasefire since the war started on 7 October. Vasily Nebenzya added that any member voting for the resolution 'will cover yourselves in disgrace'. The US envoy, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said after the vote that Russia and China had opposed the resolution because they could not bring themselves to support the clauses in it condemning Hamas

A resolution written by Israel and read by the U.S. 😂

A "ceasefire" that doesn't call for a ceasefire in 2000 words mentions Israel once.

First know what ceasefire means. US wants only hamas to surrender, not idf. That's not ceasefire.

Of course because it was just another “pretend to care about Palestinians” joke!

Didn't the US and UK do the same few weeks back?

The resolution doesn't call for a ceasefire. It's calls for an imperative, whatever that means. There's a reason why unusual language was used.

The underline here is, U.S.' resolution merely "suggests" for a ceasefire, while previous iterations calls for "immediate unconditional ceasefire"

Of course the US would never propose an actual ceasefire. This makes alot more sense.

the US did not call for a ceasefire; they "recognised the importance of a ceasefire" and tried to us it for leverage for talks in Qatar.

The US tried to side-step the legal implementation of a ceasefire and make it dependent on negotiations.

Almost as duplicitous as the original British sin of 1917.

Russia is right when they say US was dragging a ceasefire resolution in the past.

The question is what exactly is in that resolution. And no one talks about that.

It wasn't an immediate cease fire. It was am imperative for a ceasefire. One more soft suggestion for Israel and your misleading headline shows that you fell for it! At least the people in the comments know about investigative journalism!

Well, it makes sense. Linking a ceasefire to a hostage deal gives the Israeli government a big leverage to prevent the ceasefire as long as it needs, by torpedoing the hostage deal with all kinds of demands and excuses.

This was always going to happen! The US vetoed every other pease settlement on Gaza!! Since October, then they call one now is ridiculous!! China and Russia have had enough of US game's.
