Myrkur - M ALBUM REVIEW

Myrkur's full-length debut came through with some great production and a lot of promise, but some lackluster song structuring kept this record from reaching its full potential.

I wish Taylor Swift would come out with a Black Metal record. Think of the potential.

I find Anthonys reviews to be strangely therapeutic, and even a little sexually rewarding.

This was the most unoriginal Black Metal album I have heard in my life. Directly ripping off Ulver, Absurd, and other bands. There are good female-fronted Black Metal projects out there. This wasn't even close to one of them.

You can tell what score the album is going to get based on the length of the video.

I like Myrkur's music, I'd agree with the 6/10, but goddamn Relapse needs to cut back on the needless and overenthusiastic hype around the project. It's decent black metal, but it's far from being the future of the genre or whatever inane crap they're trying to claim.

This concept that some people have of "hipster black metal" is really disappointing to me. It seems like a really below the belt way of attempting to insult artists that play a style different to the way people expect.
Of course, Black metal is a somewhat insular genre so this isn't too surprising but do these people know how braindead they sound? "Because you don't play the same totally thing over and over again and sing about satan ad infinitum whilst wearing corpse paint and bullet belts and instead want to portray artistic expression, you're a hipster!"
Whatever. People with this mentality were behind the dark ages. Fuck tradition. What is the point of releasing music that has, essentially, already been released?

Are you going to review the new Libertines album? i didn't think it was very good but interesting to hear your thought on their earlier material.

I can't help but feel this album was purposefully designed to appeal to a certain market, in both the music and visual aesthetic, with the added bonus of "hey, here's an attractive woman too, she digs black metal." On top of that the marketing wasn't super subtle, and I can't really listen to this record or watch any of the videos without getting really embarrassed in like, 10 seconds. It definitely goes to show how trendy black metal is that such an album could be made, produced so slickly, with such high budget videos, and its ads bombard my Facebook newsfeed before its even out. I hear the faint death knell of a subgenera.

How did black metal end up being so accepted in the indie, or "hipster" crowd?

This album, much like the demo, is a train wreck. You'd think with taking her "support staff" into consideration, the songs wouldn't be such a mess.

Kvltists are so cute, the are essentially the militant vegans of the metal scene. Thinking so highly of themselves but failing to see that everyone else is looking down on them, rolling their eyes every time they open their mouths ^^

But I do have to thank them for the fact that they did in fact turn me on to Myrkur, I really love her music and she is a great live artist.

I'm really on the fence with this whole project. It's pretty good and it has potential but I agree that the problem primarily lies with the songwriting. I feel like many of the songs don't have much of a point, I hate to say. I'm kind of a black metal geek and I love plenty of American black metal (Leviathan, Xasthur, WITTR, Nachtmystium, etc) but I don't know if I'll be adding this project to my list of favorite USBM.

can you plz do slayer? I'm just curious on what you say, even though I can probably predict your thoughts. it's just a fairly anticipated album considering all Slayer have been through since their last album 6 years ago. I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it!

WHY should anyone care if some piece of music is "hipster"? Is that somehow a bad thing? The Sex Pistols were a created band with a calculated persona, helmed by a hipster posing as a "punk", and they were fantastic!

Have you always put up what the record in the background is? I hope not, because there have been a few that I've been really curious about.
