2.4L Toyota Excessive Oil Consumption - Part 2

preview_player
Показать описание

We finish up a 2007 Toyota Rav4 to fix an excessive engine oil consumption issue. This is a major job that requires replacing the pistons and rings. This issue is covered under an extended warranty program, but this vehicle is outside the cutoff parameters.

The TSB is not an all inclusive guide. It only provides the information not included in the normal service manual. You will still need a service manual to perform this job.

You're an amazing mechanic. I'm a canadian now living in Costa Rica and have a 2007 Toyota Rav4 and I'm having oil burning issues. Thanks for your video

Wes thank you so much for making these two videos. My step-son has a 2007 Rav 4 with the 2.4 and your video gave me the confidence to give the re-ring a shot. I did not change the pistons due to budget constraints. We installed it this morning and it fired right up. No more smoke 👍

Doesn't it feel good to hear an engine running after you've had it all the way down to nuts and bolts? Thrilling, I'd say. Nice work

Hey You have a large shop with benches, all the tools, mechanics discounts, knowledge. More than the average home garage or backyard mechanic.
Excellent tutorial

_"It's only temporary. Unless it works."_ @18.08 I pretty much spit out my coffee on that one. Great job Wes! 👍

I would imagine, If a Toyota owner was confronted with the same issue and likely outside warranty range they had 2 options 5k motor replace or 3.5k repair. Either way that sum of monies would go further buying another vehicle.
Up until recently, half that sum would get you a down payment on a newer model.
That was an awesome job and thanks for taking the time and effort bringing us along. I realize that just recording takes 2.5 x longer to do the work.

Color me impressed with your skill and determination Wes....98% of the general population would either have just kept dumping oil into it until it died or scrapped the car and bought a new one.

Ha ha, "it's only temporary, unless it works".... That's a quote from an infamous Canadian, Red Green. You made this big job look easy, Wes.

Man, I wish I had the guts and knowledge to pull an engine and tear it down. My 2009 Camry is getting thirstier with every oil change. Well done.

I seem to often buy parts no one has ever bought. Most people would scrap a vehicle when it needs that much work. A used one would cost what a mechanic would charge. I often tell my wife "I can't afford to hire myself". This is a very truthful statement. Of course we live in a throwaway. society.

That was a fantastic presentation…..thank you! I have a 2007 Scion tC with the 2AZ-FE Engine, and it sucked oil badly at 147, 000 miles. It flunked the dealership test of oil consumption and was fully repaired for free by Toyota. It now has 191, 000 miles on it, runs like a top, and doesn’t burn a drop of oil. You’ve answered all my questions about exactly what Toyota did to fix the problem. My 15 year old Scion is still just a great, sporty little car that I truly love…..and hope to keep on the road forever. Your video has convinced me of what a superb little engine the 2AZ-FE really is, and now I look forward to rebuilding it myself if/when the need ever arises. I have done D.I.Y. rebuilds on lots of Chevy and Ford engines, but never on a modern, transverse mount Asian vehicle. You’ve lowered the intimidation factor while keeping kept the magnitude of the job very realistic. Thanks again. Dr. K.

Awesome. Bi hexagon and triple square sockets are both 12 point, and look similar, but the points have different geometries. The triple square has 90 deg corners, while the bi hexagon has 60 deg corners. This Toyota uses the bi hexagon which fits the head bolts better than triple square.

I put a new (junk yard) motor in my 04 Cavalier. When I went to start it for the first time, my dad stood over the engine with a fire extinguisher. Thanks for the vote of confidence, dad! (R.I.P. pop, I love ya)

Apologies for late post Wes, excellent two videos, like yourself, I learned the basics from my dad on the farm 50+ years ago. Glad I paid attention way back then, you obviously did also. Miss him daily, find myself taking the same care/diligence with my sons in the past and recently with my grandsons. Thanks again for the brilliant posts👍🏻🙂.

I love that expression
It’s only temporary unless it works
Oh and I use the “Shipit” term all the time
You have.guts pulling any engine that far apart but your wife’s car. Double bonus points!
