US Navy Cruisers vs Russia’s Navy Cruisers

The Ticonderoga-class cruisers were originally planned as guided missile destroyers for the US Navy. These multi-role cruisers were primarily designed for the escort of carrier battle groups. Equipped with Aegis radar system, a single cruiser can defend an entire battle group. The US Navy currently operates 17 cruisers of this class. The overall length of the ship is 567ft, and the beam is around 55ft. The displacement of a fully loaded American cruiser is 9,800tons. Around 330 crew members are stationed on the warship. On the other hand, the Slava-class cruisers, were specifically designed to kill aircraft carriers and offset the strength of the US fleets. The less expensive Slava-class cruiser is a smaller alternative to the nuclear-powered Kirov-class battlecruisers. With the signature capability of anti-surface warfare, the ship served as flagships of various task forces. Originally 10 cruisers were planned, but only 3 were completed. As of today, the Russian Navy operates only 2 cruisers of this class. The Slava-class has an overall length of 612ft and a beam of 68ft. The displacement of the cruiser is 11,490 tons when fully loaded. The vessel can accommodate up to 529 crew members. The American cruiser is powered by 4 gas turbine engines generating 86,000hp. These massive engines can propel the ship to a maximum speed of 33knots. For rapid maneuvers and acceleration, the main engines are assisted by 2 additional controllable propellers. At a speed of 20 knots, the cruiser has a range of 6,000nmi. However, this range is limited to 3,300nmi at speed of 30 knots. Whereas the Slava-class is driven by 4 gas engines producing 120,000hp. At maximum RPM, the cruiser can gain a top speed of 32 knots. For acceleration, the warship is powered by boost gas turbines as well. The ship has an operational range of 6,500nmi at 18 knots and range of 2,500nm at 30 knots. American cruiser relies on the AN/SPY-1 phased array radar, which can track more than 800 targets withing 200nmi.On the other side, the Russian cruisers have MR-800 long range air search radar system, which is paired with MR-700 radar system. This radar suite is considered one of the most accurate systems as it can detect and track targets within 200nmi. The Ticonderoga is equipped with Aegis combat system, capable of defending the entire battle group. The heart of this system is its phased-array radar capable of detecting ballistic missiles. Whereas the Slava-class is equipped with naval version of S-300, which is armed with 64 long range surface-to-air missiles. The missiles can even destroy ballistic missiles within 49nmi radius. The warship is armed with 40 short range tactical surface-to-air missiles. In terms of firepower, the primary armament of American cruiser is vertical launching system installed below the deck. It has several cells which hold a variety of 122 missiles including long-range tomahawk cruise missiles. The latest variant of tomahawks can destroy both land and sea-based targets within 1,350nmi. On the contrary, the primary weapon of Slava-class is its 16 turbojet anti-ship missiles. These missiles are widely regarded as one of the most potent weapons against submarines and aircraft carriers. Watch the video for detailed conclusion

Who’s here after Russia send ships to Cuba

I'd place my money on the world's top Navy and the second largest airfleet. The US wouldn't go 1v1 unless something went critically wrong. By the time missiles are firing jets would be in the air and subs would be hunting from the US battle groups. Russia on the other hand does not have a large base of operations, issues with corruption, ammo shortages, and various other issues that hamper the comparison.

I have read that the Slava class have a feature that none warship in the fleet can do: become a submarine and reach deeps to the bottom of the seas

Yeah, I'll put my money on the CG-47 any day of the week.

We forgot to compare their onboard fire suppression systems

DDG and CG definition is pretty skewed in modern time depending on each country Navy laws and time built. Ticonderoga-class have less displacement than both the Sejong the Great and Type-55, even though the two aftermention is DDG.

So your not gonna mention the Slava that sunk. Just because it has a system onboard does not mean that the crew can use it effectively.

most russian crusiers are completly worn out. i read that on moskova at the time of its sinking that only one cwis worked out of six and only half of the rest of its weapons worked, the eletronics was just such in bad shape that it could not use its radar or fire any missiles it had while using communications. and out of all its different radar systems only one was left working.

A better analysis, would be a Ticonderoga v Type 055!

Well the Slava cruiser Moskva couldn't defend itself very well. Maybe the guys at the controls had too much vodka in their systems to use that superior technology effectively.

Aegis is an integrated rader, and battle management software suite. It cannot destroy satellites or anything else. It purpose is for detecting and tracking hostiles contacts, and assigning weapons solutions for destruction automatically.

It MK 48 torpedoes, ASROC missiles, SM-2, SM-6, SM-3 missles, plus harpoons anti-ship missiles and the two five inch guns, phalanx 20 mm CIWS, are its main weapons

Not Russian but Soviet. When all republics was involved in project. Moskva is now sunk down by just two missiles. So nothing to compare. One last Slava cruiser is piece of scrap…

I thought US Naval fleet upgraded its Offensive capabilities for the Ticon class?

Well this comes down to who can overwhelm the others defenses.
The Slava can fire 16 missiles which can be taken out with SM-2/SM-3. That takes care of all its long range weapons.
The Tico has 8 Harpoon missiles which can be taken out by S-300.
If the Tico was pre 1994 and the TASM was still available I would give it to the Tico, using 1/2 load of SM-2 (61) could quadruple tap any inbound anti ship missiles, and launch 61 TASM and 8 Harpoon. That would more than likely overload the Slava's air defense.
Modern day the Tico only has 8 Harpoons for anti ship which would probably not do the trick. They would eventually both have to come into gun range where the Slava has it.
Yes I know the Tico can fire SM-2 and SM-3 at surface targets, just not sure how effective they would be against something like a Slava class.

This is the realisation that the Royal Navy reached in the 1970s. Unfortunately, old and outdated need to go, regardless of how impressive they are.

I was in navy on uss vella gulf cg 72 ...that Slava doesn't have enough firepower or maneuverability! Cg was built to destroy multiple ships and aircraft at one time....and that's just 1 of 22 that doesn't even include ddgs !!! Yeah ...and uhh 1 of them got turned into a sea floor ornament !! Next !

Seems that the Navy is trying to phase out the Ticonderoga class to replace with something newer according to the defense budget

I have the feeling we will find out soon :D

Once again, quantity has a quality all it's own.

Cant the naval s300 missiles be used for surface warfare too?
