No amount of evidence will ever persuade an idiot - Mark Twain

Strange how he thought 95% of Americans believed like he does.

When I first saw this, I though Hitchens was being a bit of a jerk - then I watched the whole event. The questioner began his turn at the mic with a long advertisement for his own book. Given that, it's perfectly understandable why Hitchens would answer the way he did. Bravo

No one will ever improve on this phenomenal brilliant orator. Oh how he is missed. These podcasts are so appreciated.

I born a Muslim and I'm not a religious person but Hitchens words are medicine 😅

5%? Did he really grant his position as a 95% to 5% majority? That was incredibly generous to himself to do that. Even in 2009 polls put the non believers in the low 20s. Today the "nones" those that check the, not affiliated or no religious preference, box on the census is somewhere in the 30s.

I've said it for years, if you want to be weird, be weird in your room. on the street, be civil

It's like when Christians claim that we have taken prayer out of school. No we didn't. Kids can pray anytime they want. We just stopped teachers from forcing the kids to say the same prayer in unison.

The real question: "why won't you let me force my beliefs on you?"

derekmason

Damn right. People can have whatever religions they want to have, just don't force it on people who don't want it, especially through legislative means. That's authoritarianism, and it's against the first amendment.

The perpetual complex of (non existent) persecution.... to justify bullying. Yuck.

The most stupid person is someone who believes he/she knows everything.

One does have to wonder where this questioner gets his 95% from.
About 63% of Americans are Christian, 29% are not religious at all, and the rest are "nothing in particular, " or various things (Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.) at about 1 to 2% each.
Only 17% of Americans describe themselves as very religious; 31% as moderately religious; and 23% as slightly religious.
The MAJORITY of Americans do not attend any religious services, and have low confidence in religious institutions.
It's quite likely that fewer than 50% of Americans will hold ANY religious beliefs, even slightly, in 40 to 50 years.

As a believer I have absolutely no qualms in saying that sounds fair enough.

The late, great Christopher Hitchens! I wish we could hear him speak on today's issues. We could absolutely use his voice today more than ever! He is an intellectual hero of mine. "Religion is man-made and it shows. It shows very well indeed." - Christopher Hitchens

Who gave him the permission to decide for 95% of Americans, that's why the question is stupid!!

Talking to the questioner like a child is the only possible route that could’ve been taken. Simple words for simple minds.
