Another quick way to tell also is if the column is split in half. If so, then it is most likely load bearing. You can't encase a load bearing post unless you install a clam shell decorative column.

If it is a reinforced concrete column it maybe a cob. (Column on beam). So don't just take for granted when there is no column underneath, it is not a load bearing column. Just beware. As for your case it is clear that it is not a load bearing column because it is not structural.

I noticed that you didn't show the remaining ceiling part of the column. Did you remove it, eventually, or did that become a decorative piece, too, perhaps by adding a chandelier or hanging plant?
