You are suppose to put a piece of 15 lb felt paper between the butt joints of the siding. This will ensure that any water will be channeled back out onto the siding below.

We have a 109-year-old house in Idaho. Cedar siding under that is the 1.5 inch shiplap diagonal timber. That is the only thing between the outside exterior and the plaster lath walls.
It really depends on the situation. If you’re not in a position to demo a large large area, then I think it’s OK to pull the siding off. If you need to you can hit it with primer then Tyvek the area to dry it in and then siding and that’s it. I have two old areas where they had a door in a window and they did not replace it with the timbers at all. They just put the siding on the outside and basically use a thin piece of masonite. It’s ridiculous. So I’m having to cut out the old door and the old window, replace it with OSB. Then. With new siding new original cedar siding 6 inch tall. Then I will try it and paint it. Should be able to hide the old original cutouts. They tried to patch in pre-scary sometimes the way they did things 100 years ago. Although they are craftsman in building the house, the structure of the house, the strength of the timbers and the foundations and the artwork of the plaster and lath is amazing.

Why caulking will trap water underneath the siding below? I thought caulking seal the damage siding? What should u use to patch exterior siding wall ? Super thanks.

Thanks for this video. Question: The nails in the course above have been driven through the clapboard you are removing, so you had to cut them off. But aren’t those nails supposed to be driven just above the clapboard that is underneath, so you would only have to loosen those upper nails to get under there?

Is this an old plank/box style house without 2x4s? Do you recommend going with wood siding on 100 year old houses like that? If so what type of wood? Asking because I have an old box house that needs new siding and I don't want to cause moisture to build up in the walls.

I have a 100 year old home that just got painted and they caulked between every siding except around the windows. Do you think they should not have done that? I don't have any insulation, but need to see where water would go.

My house is built with the same style of boards under the siding, why can't I just take my siding off and leave that wood exposed?
