I thought if wore 14" boots that ment you could stand comfortably in 12" of water any deeper called for waders thigh high chest waders. I know sometimes you have to test the waters but it is safer to use a stick to do that. Trust me I know from experience that it can be a lot deeper than it looks and swifter. 1/2 mile later I finally was able to get too shore of the river.
