If that 30-second conversation replaced a year or several of work, it equates to that much more time that that Dad could devote to his child. Make of that what you will.

The traders name is RFM, short for Ryan Francis McMullin. Big shot at Goldman then started his own quantitative hedge fund.

I assume that the majority of the people commenting saying that they would do the same thing or see no problem. I assume that you don't have children or are still pretty young. Because if you actually DO have kids and still see no problem in this story, I would honestly feel sorry for your children.
The issue I'm having with the guy in the story is that he was already a famous trader, and wealthy that day his son was born. It's not like without that deal he wouldn't be able to buy his son a house or pay for college. But there are things money can't buy. The difference is, some people don't realize that just because something doesn't have a price tag, doesn't mean that it has no value *Even with all the money in the world, he can never buy that moment his son was born. he can never buy the memory of being the first one to hold his child. Being able to relive those memories while seeing his son grow up through life.*

AND he better hope his son never finds out about that day. Because if he does? Every time he let his son down throughout life, every missed baseball game. Every forgotten promise. Every time Work was more important...
He'll start to see everything differently. His son will finally see that he was always 2nd to other things in life since the day he was born. *Saying "I did it for you" will never sound like a statement of love from then on, but as a guilt trip, weapon in the form of words, to use when this inevitable day comes.*

If the guy was already so infamous he probably didn't need that specific trade's value to buy his new son a house lmao. Greed is greed and I'm sure his wife will remember that forever

While I can’t relate to that instance with that much money, I can relate to how your brain or architecture of thinking completely changes in an instant when watching your wife give birth to your child. I was renovating a house we were living in, half completed, and the second my boy came out I immediately wanted to sell no matter the loss and put my new family up in a nicer house and do all these things for them. Luckily I held off a few weeks for that rush to go away and make the money we needed off that house but still, it’s a wild immediate intense need to provide like never before. It’s weird.

I'd rather my dad miss my entire birth and first year of life if it meant giving us a better life in the long term.
