Does OCD Make You Worry About an Allergic Reaction?

OCD loves potential problems and will convince you that there is a way to prevent any and all possibilities. So it is no wonder that OCD has latched onto allergies.

Regardless of whether you have true allergies or not, OCD will create a list of compulsions to follow that go way above what is recommended.

In this week’s YouTube video I talk about how OCD latches onto allergies and some ways to detangle this fear from OCD.

I'm always scared of trying new food, dishes, fruits and veggies that are not common in my area; just because my OCD is telling me that I FOR SURE will have an allergic reaction to that new thing. I push myself to try at least one bite of it and see how my body (doesn't) react.. It hasn't gotten any easier though.. always the same battle in my head, always the same thoughts... sigh

I do not know if I have OCD but I suffer from a phobia of allergic reactions. What makes it harder is that I already have another phobia related to food. As for the fear of an allergic reaction, it has even extended not only to food but also to products, thus resulting in me being scared to try new hair conditioners, make-up etc. I know it is irrational but I cannot help it. It is a never-ending circle : everytime I try a new food or product, I have intrusive thoughts about getting a reaction which lead to a panic attack that I then mistake for an actual reaction. The only way to calm myself is to do reassuring things like trying to think of another time I consumed the ingredients the food or the product contains before.
