Triangle Strategy Review: SQEX ALMOST NAILED IT! (Nintendo Switch SRPG)

Triangle Strategy is a tactical RPG that gave me massive nostalgia vibes calling back to the glory days of Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Fire Emblem, etc. The combat and art style are top notch, and the story is intriguing. So what holds this game back from being a perfect 10 out of 10? Find out what I think about Triangle Strategy in my review of the full game after a hard mode playthrough on the Nintendo Switch.

Game Info

"Command a group of warriors as Serenoa, heir of House Wolffort, in a tangled plot where key choices you make will influence the story. The stunning HD-2D visual style blends 3D environments and modern effects with pixel-art characters and details.

Recruit over 20 playable characters with distinct skills and steer your party in a tangled plot where control of the realm is at stake.

Each decision you make will bolster one of three convictions—Utility, Morality, or Liberty—which together make up Serenoa’s worldview and influence who will join you and lend their talents to your army. You can play through the game multiple times to see how other choices impact the adventure.

Maneuver characters around multi-tiered maps to gain the upper hand. Use the terrain to your advantage by flanking enemies, or link elemental attacks to cause massive damage. Level up your recruits to secure new abilities and upgrades."

Although I agree with you on the pacing, in MY own opinion it was the contrary to what you felt; I LOVED having more story than battle. As an old school rpg gamer, I missed this type of games where your reward is battling and obtaining more and more story that keeps me wanting to win the next fight in order to progress the story. Lately a lot of rpgs concentrate on mechanics and gameplay and completely forgo having an engaging story to keep us rpgers going, and I felt I got all the story I could ask for in the game.
Havent finished it yet though, but having a blast with it!

Love how you and me have the same reason to play These kinda games lol. next battle 😁👌. I remember playing The original FFT game and just playing Random battles non stop just to try out my team. Then they ended up leveling up with me and getting sweet gear which I ended up being like 🤔 what if I steal it, so I did and ended up having tons of fun trying all that new gear out while leveling up which then made the enemies more stronger and repeat. Well when I got back to story. I was OP 😂. So yeah I definitely think that kind of pacing is needed. With story leaving up as well would've been perfect.
If too much story then it gets boring same as u said. So you need a break to enjoy the great combat
Too bad WOTV lacks this as well, a good PVE Content that's fun to just pick up a day and Do without having to FARM IT 😅. Too much farming is also boring. A good balance of pacing is needed for a good game and gummi needs to finally understand that because they fail to understand what made the original FFT game so good and Nothing but farming and lil permanent stuff is not it

Based on watching your playthrough I could understand what you mean with the pacing. Although for me personally it seemed to be the general formula for most jrpgs where it starts out heavy with story/dialogue and moves more into combat. I did notice it was hours though before you even got into battles, so I can understand your reasoning for the pacing. Overall it looks like a great game and as a fan of FFT it is definitely up my alley as I am also a fan of Fire Emblem as well. Appreciate your thoughts and sharing your experiences in the review.

Dude, I didn't even notice the pacing. I am so wrapped up in nostalgia that I'm just loving it. Also, I guess when I get bogged down by story, I go get a sandwich and a drink then come back fresh

I have zero time for this game, but it looks amazing.
Also my wife has never played Ocarina of Time or Majoras Mask, so we're playing those with what time we have.

From the sound of it, the game is a 8.5 to 9/ 10 on the first playthrough, because you're excited to get through the story, but the pacing is a little slow, but it might be a 10/10 for replayability. Example, I used to fly 30 times a year and would play FFT in the airport and on the plane, never really got bored of it, but it was easy to put down when I had to. Sound like this game would be good in that situation as well.

I didn't know that spoils carried over if I died and retried a battle, I thought it was just used items and experience that carried over

The thing I like about hard mode is that even with thick boys the enemy can still one up you. This game made me both love and hate archers because they are OP on both your side and enemy side another thing I’m mixed on is that on hard mode all your units are made of paper but overall this game is what I needed in my life

I'd buy a Switch and pick this up if it had recruitable mercenaries. Btw if you haven't heard of or tried Fell Seal, I recommend it 💪

I haven't completed it yet but the pacing is an issue just would like a couple battles in between the story/big battles. I do really like the game though

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game, but the criticisms on the game’s pacing are absolutely justified. My biggest complaint about the narrative blocks is how overwritten they are.

A villain would laugh maniacally while doing something super shady and then the party would spend the next 10 minutes taking turns REALLY hammering home just how shady that person was.

I also noticed watching your playthrough that those conversations dragged a bit too long.

The story is fabulous, I don't see a pacing issue. To me that feels like we have a serious problem in our culture. We want actions, we want lack of context, .lack of depth, lack of long work with big pay off.

If you appreciate quality story and character development in a game, don't let "pacing" throw you off.

Also, you you rush through the dialogue like I see SO MANY streamers do, then you can safely ignore any of their opinions of story. If you aren't actually paying attention and rushing through, no wonder you felt pacing issue. (edit: this comment isn't Aurron Jayy because he did watch and soak in the story

Just imagine if Nintendo made a console that didn't rock 15 year old tech. A PS5 caliber system by Nintendo would have cornered the market. Their 1st party games are just too good.
