Stuart Hameroff - Physics of Free Will

Free will has traditionally been a problem in philosophy. Recently, the battleground of free will has shifted to neuroscience. Now some claim that to solve the problem of free will, we must go far deeper, to the fundamentals of physics, down to subatomic forces and particles. But don't free will and physics operate at vastly different levels or size scales?

If free will DOES exist, how come I have no choice when my wife asks me to paint the house, clean the garage, bathe the dog, etc??

4 minutes 42 seconds later I'm still confused.

every person on this planet should listen to Stuart.

I've never seen Robert call something out like that. He should do it more often, I think it improved the discussion.

My opinion is we might not have an absolute free will, a will independent from the universe. But free will is not an illusion either. It is rather an abstraction. If there is nothing beyond our brains that is.

People who think they got it figured out are always dangerous

If I listen to him and Roger Penrose, I hear really interesting music. About "impossible" quantum processes in the brain, is it not true that each time a big biomolecule like an enzyme is made, for it to to work well, it needs to be in a precise 3D shape but there are so many options how to fold that the correct shape is only found fast enough through a kind of tunneling ??

Hameroff isn't the most compelling exponent of the theory he's expounding, but evidence suggests he's correct in its essentials. Radin has performed experiments with photographs of living and dead people with all temporal and dress cues removed, and while the correct response from the subject was well above chance, brain scans showed that whether the observer guessed correctly or incorrectly, brain patterns overwhelmingly revealed that the subject knew whether it was a live or dead person within milliseconds of the image appearing.

Hammeroff brings the goods when he talks. The rest pontificate. Stuart is a searcher. He is tireless and relentless which makes him so amazing.

Anyone who doesnt believe they have free will.. I challenge you to do an experiment.. Quit your job/career tomorrow and dont apply for a new one.. Just do it.. Its a thought experiment.. Since whatever you would do you would do anyway.. Then you can feel what its like to make a deliberative choice firsthand... I dunno if this guy is right but ultra-skeptics clearly have it backwards.. First comes reality.. Then scientific explanation.. NOT the other way around.. With your mindset a few hundred years ago you would have said that some "invisible immaterial force of electromagnetism" is insane pseudoscience

"...a neon sign that says we have no idea of how this thing works"... right on!

Whether we have free will or not, there's nothing we can do about it. But I suspect that if consciousness is connected to quantum physics, it might be a superposition. We don't have free will unless we measure it. Or the other way around. I'm not smart enough to understand it 😅

What's this guy talking about? Spidey Sense?

at 2:54 likely means Dean Radin and Daryl Bem

Physics of free will, my bare,
physics of Mr. Kuhn's speculative inventions.

I don't understand what is so controversial about the idea of what is essentially feedback. It is mathematically real and is hard to get around philosophically. It has a relation to non linear systems too with which most modern physics/mathematics cannot cope.

Tell me, why does anyone deny free will when everyone thinks they have it including the people who deny that it exists at all?

Never knew Goldberg knows about free will 🤪

Nooo. Don't invoke the quantum whenever you need some magic effect for you metaphysics. Besides, you're too late. God already lives there :-P
