When I was young, the conversion process was just clipping a pickup into the round sound hole in the body, then plugging it into the guitar amp . No drilling or cutting and easily reversed/unclipped for an acoustic melody .

The pickup doesn’t “translate vibrations into sound” it creates an electric current from the vibrations, which is carried by wires to the amp. The amp “translates” electrical signals into sound.

I did this impossible mod on my acoustic 25 years ago.

Your saddle will be too high if you simply place the piezo underneath it. It’s going to screw up the height of your strings. You either have to make the groove deeper or reduce the height of the saddle.

I dont know if they still exist, but I "inherited" my dad's FG-180, from the 70's I think, and he had a removable pickup for it. It just clipped on to the sound hole and plugged in like normal! Sounded fine, from what I remember. (My ex broke it out of anger many years ago...)
