The Bevel Function in Blender let you easily manipulate the edge corner of your 3d object. Apply round / soft corners or create interesting socket shapes with Profile Type in Blender 2.9
The Bevel modifier apply a bevel to the whole mesh.

Try using the "Cutoff" intersection type to avoid the messy corners of the custom profile bevels. It's not a perfect solution but it doesn't make a mess.

It's a bit annoying that every bevel tutorial uses a cube so their bevels are at a nice 45deg angle. But when you don't have a cube, the bevel is uneven. How do you fix this?
