Even in the 1950s, "Silence of the Lambs" would be too much for Alfred Hitchcock even if he did "Psycho" (1960).

There's no way in the 1950's this part would be played by a woman. It would be Clarence played by Cary Grant. Buffalo Bill would not be so perverted and morbid, it would be more a Jack The Ripper serial killer. In Manhunter/Red Dragon, Will Graham would be played by James Stewart.
