Holbeins have worked for me in Kerby Rosanes books. I love how I get vibrant pigment without the waxy buildup. So far it's the only books I've used these pencils in. Thanks for sharing! ❤

Thank you. Everyone in the French colouring community seems to have or be getting these lately and all you hear is how amazing they are. I think I'll stick with my Polychromos and Arteza pencils. Since I ONLY do colouring in books (do not have a printer and no interest in learning to do my own art) it would be a big issue if I had pencils that potentially do not work in my books. The Prismacolor and Polychromos flowers really looked much better. They made the Holbein look like it was done with children's pencils.

This is a fantastic review! I have found exactly the same issues as you when using my Holbeins in coloring books. I thought it was something I was doing wrong so I can't thank you enough for this video. I hope you enjoy your Irojitens and Black Widows. I have the Irojitens and really enjoy using them with Polychromos and Pablos. The Irojitens are translucent which makes them great for layering and the colors are gorgeous! I'll be looking forward to your review of the Black Widows because I've had my eye on them but I'd like to hear what you have to say about them first. Thanks so much for all you do. 💖

Thank you for a detailed and honest review. I have the 50 pastel set of Holbein’s but haven’t used them in a colouring book yet! I’d love to see an in depth review of the Irojitens to see if you feel thee same as I do!! xxx💕

I like to use them on top of a watercolor base, then use the holbeins to darken the schades. When i use only pencils i try the same technique i use with the Derwent color softs, i place the colors next to each other and not realy blending and building layers because it wont work for me. Thank you for your honest review💕

Nice video. I like how you edit it. Talk and then get some coloring done. I have the Holbein’s and thought similarly when I swatched them. Almost gooey and inconsistent lay. Although I was able to achieve some light touches. Then I heard Sammie say the pencil likes toothy paper. Made me want to try it on the only really toothy paper I got, watercolor paper. I hand drew a leaf 🍃 and it was magic. I’m am now coloring an autumn 🍁 leaf that I drew on this paper and I just can’t get over How beautiful the colors look. My brother commented how rich, creamy and full of depth it looks. So it probably does work best for creating personal art work. But I bet there is some toothy paper out there that can fit through a printer that might work for printing pdf.

I liked your review. I don’t like swatching watching. It’s much more interesting to see them being used.

Thanks for the review. I've been super hesitant to spend that kind of money on pencils, but I also don't use pencils a lot and want to improve with them. This was SUPER helpful and I think I'll just focus on using what I have 😃

Thank you so incredibly much for the amazing and detailed review! May I ask, have you used them more and on different paper, art paper? I heard they do like toothier paper and some people say more layering instead of blending ( others say opposite!). I hear so many different things! It’s really interesting to hear. Thank you so much again for the detailed review and comparison.
So sorry, more questions! Now you have Derwent lightfast & Pablo too, are you able to list/order them ( and polychromos & prisma) in your favourite? I hope that makes sense 💕
I hope you are enjoying them more now too so it isn’t such a large waste of money 💙💕

Thanks. I have been wanting holbeins forever but maybe they won't be as good as I thought. I have a small set I will try out more on different books.

Holbein are fantastic, but they need to be used on proper art paper and the sharpener you use matters to. They are too good to waste on colorbooking, in my opinion.

Hi Rebecca! I was wondering if you have ever tried the Holbeins on a page primed with the Art Basics Gesso... I have been priming most of my colouring book pages with that Gesso ever since I saw the video on your other channel. You were so right, it is absolutely amazing as a base for the Procolours and I am trilled that I can use them in any book that I want now. I'm having similar experiences with the Irojitens because they do need a tooth as well and the Art Basics Gesso makes them really glide like Prismacolors. I only have the pastel set of the Holbeins but I think I will be testing them on the Gesso before I buy any other colours. I'm sure they will be amazing on the right paper but I want to be able to use them in my books too...

I've found that applying a couple layers of gesso to the pages makes them take color pencils so much better. I love Klara Markovas books, but the paper doesn't have enough tooth for Polychromos, imo. After applying 2 to 3 layers of clear gesso the Polychromos lay down wonderfully. Maybe applying gesso to the pages would be helpful when using Holbein pencils?

I didn't have any better luck than you did with my little set of Holbeins. I think it's because these pencils are a weird hybrid of wax and oil blends. They are classified as an oil pencil, but they are kind of both. That makes them have different properties than all the other brands. They might work okay for layering on top of watercolors.

I'm finding.the same issue.. I was shocked at how they laid down so grainy looking chunky like you said. in fact I was quite disappointed in the cost of the pencils and how many times I had to sharpen to keep a sharp point. I came to realize that I love my prismas the best. Have you found a resolution since you filmed this? Ty

I was curious about what you thought of the Holbeins for coloring books, because i just got them and my experience wasn’t great, either. I found them to be very crumbly and not hold a point. I had to sharpen them very often. When I used the T’gaal sharpener my ends kept breaking off. I guess I press to hard when I’m coloring. I don’t know why my ends of the pencils kept breaking with the T’gaal, but ended up sharpening with the Dahle 133. That worked much better. I like a firmer pencil. I love my Black Widows. I have full set syndrome. I think i need the full sets of all the pencils. BTW, this was the first of your videos I’ve watched and I will subscribe to your channel! Thank you for the review!

I know this an older video but only just come across it. The beauty of these pencils is very light layers and more layer and you can get the same results as your Prismacolor. The other thing is using them as a base and then use polychromos for details on the top. Always mix them. I feel your using too much pressure for these pencils. Try again.
