I think number 3 would work really well if you just flipped it upside down, the top part of the oval looked flatter than the bottom part

Nice! But you still want a little bit of up and down movement, right? if you just have a flat line (like in the last), wouldn't the legs just slide along the floor, dragging the feet back and forth?

one simple linkage that can be used for a walking machine is the chebychev (i don't know how to spell it since it's a hard word to spell) lambda linkage

While the designs are amazing, it's a bit hard for me to watch with the screeching of the plastic.
