Gibson Gazette: Learn more about the Mary Ford Les Paul Standard and Mary Ford Collection here.

Born Iris Colleen Summers on July 7, 1924, Mary Ford was an accomplished guitarist, vocalist, and actress who was among the biggest recording artists of the early 1950s. Through her career in country music and her connections with Gene Autry and Eddie Dean, she developed a musical partnership with Gibson icon Les Paul that led to their marriage in 1949. In 1951 alone, the duo sold over six million records, and between 1950 and 1954, they recorded a string of 16 top-ten hits that showcased Mary’s rich, smooth voice, complex, perfectly executed harmonies that she sang along with herself through multi-track recording and overdubbing (a groundbreaking recording technique for the time), and versatile guitar playing that seamlessly blended country, jazz, and pop. In 1951, Mary and Les influenced the design of the ES-295 hollowbody with a custom order. In 1958, it is believed that one Les Paul™ Goldtop model with an ES-295-style floral pickguard and matching armrest was made at the request of Mary Ford. Now, Gibson is proud to release the Mary Ford Les Paul Standard, based on that one-of-a-kind original. The Goldtop finish is accented by a Vintage Cherry back—a rarity for a Goldtop model. In addition to the cream and gold floral pickguard and armrest, it also features a mahogany body with a maple cap, a mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard and SlimTaper™ profile, and is powered by a pair of Burstbucker™ pickups, with a Burstbucker 2 in the neck position and a Burstbucker 3 in the bridge position. A hardshell case completes this offering that honors one of the most beloved and innovative artists of the 20th century.

Key Features
Mahogany Neck with a SlimTaper Profile
Burstbucker 2 and Burstbucker 3 Humbucking Pickups
Non-Weight-Relieved Mahogany Body with a Carved, Figured Maple Cap
Rosewood Fretboard with Acrylic Dot Inlays and 22 Medium Jumbo Frets

I think everyone is missing the actual importance of this guitar. Mary Ford was an exceptional guitar player, and along with her husband, was very influential. If I have to tell you any more than that you probably don’t need this guitar. John, you and Zach kind of let me down a little on the history associated with this one, but this is the first time. Still giving you the “thumbs up.”

The first signature model I've ever been interested in.

What I will say is this is a nice way of getting your hands on a goldtop LP with a heritage cherry back, which is a relatively rare spec. I'd live with the two small screw holes and put on a regular pickguard to complete the look. That is a guitar I could get behind.

This feels like a perfect guitar for me. Almost all the specs I’d choose. I need to have this.

Yeah and the tuners are different on the other ‘60’s Les Paul Standard . With all that being said, I ordered the Heritage Artisan Aged H-150 in Dirty Lemon Burst 9.3 lbs for waaaay less . ( I got a GREAT DEAL ON IT )

I love those banjo styled armrests!! They look awesome but I’m not sure how noticeable it’ll be when playing. But the look is awesome

Sounds great, and you can afford it or not. The aesthetics will be the dealbreaker, I think. It does have a 50s look, but the decoration isn't overdone.

While I respect them giving Mary Ford a signature guitar, this feels like a weird hodgepodge of specs that probably doesn't represent what Mary used. Cool guitar. But it still feels a little disingenuous.

Great review, JOHN!
Love the history behind this guitar. Huge props to LES PAUL and MARY FORD, their incredible show and talented playing. However, my belief is that this guitar is a fine piece of history and deserves its place in the archives and museum. I don’t think that is a popular; “ I gotta get this one” guitar. Think Gibson goofed. IMHO.

I thought the tone was music to my ears.

Those BB2 and BB3 pickups sounded pretty dark to me. I have a 2015 LP Classic Sprint Run which was actually too bright. Bright pickups can be darkened in many ways - add pickup covers, dial in some tone with the tone pots, EQ on pedals or amp. It came with uncovered zebra 57 Classic and Classic Plus pickups and 60s slim neck.

Does a signature guitar just have more mojo though? Is it worth spending $200 to have a name connected rather than the basic model?

Great video, the white Armrest is not my style. I am a subscriber and entered the Win a Les Paul contest. Keep the videos coming love to follow. Just not sure how to find out how many subscribers there are at this point.

Not true. The first Les Paul Classics, back in 1990, had a slim taper 6O:s neck and were gold tops over the whole body. The quality of these guitars were custom shop level. Also the "Signature T" - only made in 2013 - was a kind of standard with a 60:s neck, and available as gold top. 😂

Hey, I discovered you guys live close to me. Someday I'll buy a guitar from you and stop by to pick it up and meet the two of you.

Oh, thank you, Gibson, thank you ever so much! We are not worthy! Are you sure you don't want to charge an additional $1000 for this? I mean, it's more than worth it! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to play something as authentic as this!

How come Gibson chnages two plastics on a guitar and calls it Mary Ford signature?!
