Palaeontologist here! For anyone curious what’s real and what’s “fake” (and by that I mean a replica copied from a real fossil):

A great way to tell is not the colour, but the way the fossils or casts are mounted!

Years ago (including my own museum that is steeped in the Bone Wars), scientists wanted to show the world a complete skeleton and try to outcompete others (Cope vs Marsh). Others wanted them to be the same colour and no visible differences (as best they could). You can still see this in some museums!

Now, we LOVE to showcase what was found and what’s missing! Some may be a drastic change in colour (like dark brown being fossils and a white cream being casts which can be seen at MOR).

In this short, pause and look to see if you can see metal supports. Does the bone look like it’s being cradled like a baby? It’s real (or a portion of it!!). If it looks to be drilled through or have no visible exterior support, it might be a cast!

ETA: If it’s laying on a support structure or in a case, look closely to see the fossil prep work that someone (like myself) has done!

I’ll definitely have to do a video for my channel and showcase the differences at my own museum (Cope is our guy).
