It is SO COOL to learn that my favorite dinosaur as a kid actually turned out to be a giant porcupine rhino… or porcupino, if you will.

Quills don't necessarily mean defense. They were likely more like bristles. Not only that, Triceratops was still quite fast for a 12 ton animal. They also had a ball and socket joint in the neck, meaning they can turn their head at incredible ranges.
Defenses of Triceratops:

-horns that grew up to around a meter or even longer

-heavy weight. (could help at knocking predators over. Specifically Tyrannosaurus)

-ball and socket joint. As i mentioned earlier, they had a ball and socket joint in their neck. Maneuvering their head at phenomenal ranges

-speed. (Speed: around 14-15 MPH, likely even 20, thats faster than a human.)

-frill. These frills were like shields. Providing a thick defense, this was used to protect the arteries around the neck.

-herd protection. These animals most likely moved in herds. Meaning it would be hard for a Tyrannosaurus to get an easy picking like a juvenile. We have a specimen called "The Dueling Dinosaurs" (Not to be confused with "The Fighting Dinosaurs") Where a young Triceratops was in combat with a young Tyrannosaurus.

-durable skin. Triceratops had incredibly thick skin, helping it with tanking bites from a Tyrannosaurus. We have evidence of this after finding teeth marks in Triceratops fossils.

OMG finding skin has been a game changer towards learning about dinosaurs.

When I was a kid it was believed that dinosaurs were just big lizards with their tails dragging on the ground. Now we (know) that their tails were suspended off the ground to balance out the weight of their heads. 😮 I’m 75 years old. 😊

As a fellow Lane myself, I approve of this video. We Lanes are pretty amazing, and humble, very humble. So humble its astounding.

Paleontologists: PRESERVED FEET! TAKE SOME PICS

To quote the Smithsonian:

It’s not unreasonable to think that Triceratops had patches of bristles, but the truth is that there’s no positive evidence that such ornamentation actually adorned the dinosaur, either.

That scar on his forehead is seriously insane. Judging by the angle and depth of the laceration it was probably about male triceratops. But to survive that battle is crazy.

Based on the raised ridges, that looks less like actual petrified skin and more like a fossilized impression of the animal's hide. So what you're seeing is inverted, so those would not be holes but raised bumps.

Triceratops has always been one of my favorite dinosaurs! Now I learn (at 51) that they’re way cooler than I thought! 😊

A truck sized porcupine with horns, living in the time of the dinosaurs would be terrifying

Wow these dinosaurs changed a lot from when I was a little boy in 2007. Man science is weird sometimes.
