After mastering the foundational Combatives Self-Defence curriculum, practitioners can delve into advanced techniques to elevate their close combat skills, particularly when faced with the prospect of being crowded with their back to a wall. This advanced training incorporates Combative battlefield Ju Jutsu skills, which are significantly more intricate than the simple yet potent techniques covered in the initial Combatives for Self-defence training.
Ju Jutsu, rooted in ancient battlefield practices, differs fundamentally in philosophy and technique from its sporting derivatives, such as Judo or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In Ju Jutsu, techniques always commence and conclude with striking. The initial strikes aim to destabilize, distract, and create openings in opponents' defences. The subsequent strikes are intended to "finish" the confrontation decisively. Historically, in the combat conditions of medieval Japan, this meant delivering a final blow up close, often using a knife to exploit weaknesses in the opponent's armour.
At the Combatives Group, we train civilians for self-defence rather than warfare. Adhering to Hellenic law, we ensure our training remains unarmed, focusing on neutralizing the threat with striking techniques and then disengaging swiftly to move towards safety.
Advanced combatives training introduces a variety of throwing techniques to complement these core principles. Throws can be incredibly effective in close combat situations, especially when pinned against a wall. Learning to leverage and redirect an opponent's force through well-executed throws enhances the defender's ability to escape. It can incapacitate the attacker long enough to secure a safe retreat.
These throwing techniques, derived from battlefield Ju Jutsu, emphasize fluidity and precision. Practitioners learn to blend strikes seamlessly with throws, ensuring a continuous flow of action that keeps the attacker off balance. For instance, an advanced practitioner might begin with a palm strike to the chin, followed by a knee strike to the midsection, and then execute a hip throw to bring the attacker to the ground. Each movement is designed to be swift and decisive, minimizing the risk of counter-attacks.
The training also places a strong emphasis on situational awareness and adaptability. Practitioners are taught to assess their environment quickly and use it to their advantage. A wall, initially a source of confinement, can become a tool for leverage or a means to redirect the opponent's energy. This adaptability is a key strength in real-world scenarios where unpredictability is the norm, making practitioners feel prepared and in control.
Moreover, psychological conditioning is a significant component of advanced Combatives training. Practitioners learn to maintain composure under duress, making split-second decisions that could mean the difference between life and death. This mental toughness, built through rigorous drills and simulated encounters, prepares individuals to handle high-stress situations with clarity and resolve, making them feel resilient and ready for any challenge.
Advancing in Combatives training is a journey that empowers practitioners, equipping them with a comprehensive skill set that goes beyond basic self-defense. By integrating complex throwing techniques and the nuanced philosophy of Ju Jutsu, practitioners gain a deeper understanding of close combat. This advanced training ensures that individuals are not only capable of defending themselves but can do so with a level of proficiency and confidence that maximizes their chances of escaping unharmed.
