1998 Mercury 200 Hp 2.5L Offshore charging system design and testing

This video is an introduction to the older 2.5 liter 175-200 hp V6 Mercury 2-stroke outboards. In it, I briefly discuss the ignition system components and then focus on the dual 20amp charging system. Something from the late 90's I thought was a excellent design.

Hi Ted, just found your video and it really helped clear up the operation of the charging system for me. I would love to see a video of you actually testing the regulators and stator. thanks for putting this video together for us.

Great video. I have a question tho. I have 4 yellow wires coming out of my stator. 2 of those wires have a black stripe. Are those 2 with the stripe indicating 1 leg of the charging system as the just yellow wires would be the other?

I've got a 1996 200hp BlackMax. I ran the boat just a little ways and stopped to fish. The cdi box was burning a hole in the center of it. It would still run but the center of the box is burned out. What do you think caused it? And do you think changing just the cdi box will fix it? Thanks for any help!!

Great video. Have the same engine, unfortunately has developed an overheating issue. Ive changed the water pump twice, thermostats, poppet valve, flushed and back flushed twice. In the process of removing the exhaust manifold to check for blockages. All bolts are out but the manifold appears to be stuck to the head. I'm so frustrated im ready to beat it with a sledgehammer. Engine runs really well otherwise

we can only put oil in the tank

and I want to get it working again

Hey Ted. Just found your channel. Great content. Any vids on upgrading old merc 2L from rectifier to regulator rectifier. Problem is that my 1985 150Hp is overcharging and from what I can find this can only be fixed by adding a regulator to the charge system
Thanks
Pete

Hello Sr. I have a problem with my 1999 mercury 175 hp efi, everything it's working, I just noticed that I don't have return of voltage so the battery won't be charging with the motor. I'm out of the US, that's why I'm asking for your help. Thank you.
