The CGI in Lord of the rings still looks better than that of the Hobbit

Awesome! You must have seen the films 10, 000 times by now to notice these things (especially the crew member at the prologue). Have you noticed the visible crew member at the march to the Black Gate in ROTK?

My favorite is when Eomer's sword slides out of its scabbard just as he says, "look for your friends, but do not trust a hope". He actually glances down at it sliding out but he keeps on going with the scene!

When there are heavy deadlines, sometimes people are in a rush and do not notice certain details or don't have the time to fix them. Remember also that the computers were way older and rendering took waaay longer too.

the two shots of hobbitton are just the same shot with a night filter. the "backwards" shot at edoras is because it was originally to be a shot of the army leaving for helms deep, but then they changed the story line so eowin would go with them. they liked the shot so they removed the army digitally and closed in on her instead of pulling out. just a way to use the footage instead of cutting it out completely.

3:28 I didn't even notice the smoke, I was actually looking at the flags and Eowen's clothes, which are waving in reverse

Also I didn't even notice Legolas had blue eyes! I was sure he had brown eyes during the entire trilogy, which made it seem weird when they gave him blue eyes in the Hobbit

You should check out one of the first (maybe the actual first) Helm's deep wide shots, zooming/panning outward. It's clearly not finished, the compositing is horrible on the walls, and you can see blatantly obvious CG tents that aren't tracked very well. Also, the shot of Gandalf entering the top of Minas Tirith, look at the tower to the right and you can see clear distortion from where they extended/modified it.

Watching it on Blu-ray, these issues really become obvious - also where the CGI doubles are crystal clear, and the miniatures are blurry, and vice versa as well where they didn't bother making things consistent. At the end of ROTK where people are clapping at Aragorn's ceremony, the background matte painting is clear, and the rest of the shot is blurry. I could go on and on...
