I always attributed the black looking R2D2 to the blackness/darkness of space itself, and never thought about it at all past that.

I’ve always seen the “dust” from the lightsaber duel but I thought it was to show the effect of 2 heated blades (I assume the lightsabers are hot) clashing and then making smoke

Consider when you watch the originals it was 1977, not 2019. Plus Lucas had a very small budget to begin with.
