How did Vito Corleone know Tessio was the Traitor? Why Did Tessio Betray Michael Corleone? How How did Vito know it was Tessio? Why did Tessio betray Michael Corleone?

Why did don Corleone’s most trusted men and close personal friend end up betraying the heir to the Corleone family, don Michael Corleone. Tessio was one of the most important members in the Corleone mafia family, playing a critical role since its inception, and whose talent were used by don Vito to build the Corleone empire.
And just as he predicted Michael was approached exactly in that way, but unfortunately it turned out to be one of the most important individuals in the family.
Many people have been asking a lot of different questions about this situation as well as questions about the caporegime himself Salvatore Tessio. Which we will uncover, however what we will be mainly focusing on more intriguing aspects such as,
Why did Michael state that is was the smart move?
How did don Vito know with full certainty that all this would happen? How did the Don use the philosophy of the infamous Niccolò Machiavelli, to his advantage and warn his son Michael about what to expect.
So, even though most of us already have a pretty clear picture of exactly how everything happened, we will mainly focusing on diving into the Dons brain, and analysing his thinking process. And hopefully we could all learn and somehow benefit from this.

In the novel, it's made clear that Michael was extremely distraught that it was Tessio who was the traitor. Not just because of the personal friendship or anything of the sort, but because he was such a crucial member of the Corleone family. He had been responsible for some of the families most important victories, he was an extremely powerful asset, and finding out that he was the traitor means that they lose his expertise, as he has dug his own grave.
And to really summarise why Tessio or anyone for that matter, to even think about, let alone actually betray Michael, was the fact Michael was not feared.

So interesting that Tessio liked Michael but didn’t fear him the way he did Don Vito. He was actually probably more loyal to Don Vito then Clemenza - yet a traitor to Michael. Maybe because Clemenza worked with Michael in the assassination of the Turk and the chief of police he formed somewhat of a bond with Michael and had a better awareness of what Michael was capable of. Also Michael had previously saved Clemenza’s skin when Sonny thought Clemenza sold out the old man. Clemenza might have not know about it, but it’s possible their relationship already had a little more solid footing based on their past dealings with each other. Tessio didn’t really ever catch the vision of what Michael was about and never really spent much time getting to know him. He immediacy jumped to the conclusion that Michael was weak when Michael told him and Clemenza to hold off retaliating against Barzini not realizing how cool and strategic Michael was. As a result Tessio vastly under estimated Michael’s cunning.

Something I’ve always found interesting, was that when Vito was in the hospital, it was Tessio’s men who were supposed to be guarding him. But “the police made them leave”.

The scene where Tessio shaked Barzini's hand gave it away. Tessio was smart but Vito was smarter which is why Vito was the Godfather.

Michael was truly his fathers son. After seeing how cooly he handled the attempted killing of his father at the hospital. Then his planning of the murders of Solozzo and McCluskey. Not only planning but ruthlessly carrying out their demise. It should have been clear in everyone's eyes that Michael was a man of unique intelligence and personal force. How Hagen, Tessio and Clemenza could think that Michael was not ready to lead the family is astonishing. It only shows how shortsighted they were. In reality Michael was his own consigliere. So intelligent and cunning no advisor could equal his judgment or ruthlessness. Even his acuity of having Tom Hagen kept out of the Vegas operation was tactically brilliant. Later, when a plot was made to kill him, Haven was the only one he could truly trust. Every move he made was calculated, brilliant and carried out to maximum effect. One by one his enemies fell before him like wheat to a scythe. Including unfortunately for him, Sal Tessio. A man who mistook a cool calculating young man as weak. Instead of the apex predator he was.

As Vito says in the movie, "Barzini will move first. He will set up a meeting with someone you trust, guaranteeing your saftey. Whoever comes to you with this meeting is a traitor, remember this"

Tessio was intelligent. The time had come for him to break away and form his own family, after the don semi retired. He never meant to betray Michael but Barzini knew tessio was smart and savvy then offered him a deal. Also barzini invading tessio territory made him vulnerable. Clemenza was loyal but never ambitious.

I figured that Vito knew how it would play out because that was the method he would use if he were in Barzini's position. Who knows, maybe Vito had already used that tactic himself in the past. The person who betrayed Michael would have to be a high ranking Corleone family member. There's no way a low ranking gangster was going to be able to set up Michael. Finally, it would be Tessio because his intelligence was his weakness in this particular instance. Based on what was known, Michael was doomed and was going to get crushed by Barzini. The purely smart thing to do then is jump ship if you have the opportunity. To stick with Mchael means sticking to loyalty over smarts and Tessio just couldn't do that. That's how I see it.

Clemenza was emotional, Tessio was always smarter and calculating .

Tesso's greatest mistake was underestimating Michael. In the end, that critical mistake which ended Tesso's life, is what lead to the deaths of the heads of the five families. Word to the wise, never underestimate Michael Corleone.

He didn't know "who", he only knew "how". That's why he said to Michael "whoever comes to you with this Barzini meeting, . he's the traitor."

I love the way they found actors that were believable as younger versions. Great casting!

I always felt that Clemenza was loyal to the Corleone family, not just Don Vito. Clemenza took the time to teach Michael how to cook for a large group around the time of the attempted assassination. It was Clemenza who influenced Vito when they first meet to seal the carpet, and slowly brought Vito to life. In the movie, it is not mentioned who brought in Tessio, but my guess is it was Clemenza. Vito, before meeting Clemenza, was hard working with no ties to anything criminal. I think that Vito kept Tessio close because he didn’t really trust him. ‘Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.” Vito had no reason to think Clemenza would betray him when the opportunity came. It was Tessio who initially voiced his discontent with Michael. Clemenza spoke up after. Also, when the Don asked if they had faith in him, it was only Clemenza who answered, giving assurance that he would do what Michael was asking.

We need to see another film about Vito, Tessio, and Clemenza in the 1930's during their war to the top. It would fill out the timeline nicely. Maybe seeing that can give some more background to Vito's relationship to the two men and how he protected himself from them once he was established.

One thing to note is that Vito actually knows Tessio through Clemenza. Clemenza was his neighbor and he met Tessio when they started stealing dresses. But I guess as he became the Don, he was able to make himself the center of attention and both of the men adhered to his wishes that they remain separate both business wise and socially. I would like to see how he handles this delicate issue of keeping them separate as to not offend them but make them understand that it was necessary.

Clemenza (and Genco) saw Vito go from an honest hard working man to a violent criminal mastermind almost overnight without missing a beat. He recognized that Vito in Michael. By the time Tessio (and later Hyman Roth) joined the fold, Vito was already a criminal and Tessio never got to see that change and so he did not think that Michael was capable of it too.

Vito Corleone actually didn't fully trust his capos, not even under his control. This is explained to us in the original novel, but was never shown in either of the films. In the novel Vito tells his captains that he does not want the two to meet in person unless under certain circumstances, such as when he summons them together. He tells his capos that this is merely a precaution so that authorities and whatnot can not link them together. However, we are interestingly told that both Clemenza and Tessio knew that Vito had a different reason - that the order to keep the captains from meeting together was actually meant to make harder for both of them to conspire against their don. This tells us that while Vito did highly value his friends Clemenza and Tessio, he did not put it pass them that they may one day try to betray him.

"cant do it sally" one of the most brutal line in the movie

I love how in the movie Clemenza was the one furious at Vito that Michael was making specific moves while Tessio seemed ambivalent to the whole thing then he ends up being the one who betrays Michael while Clemenza carried out one of the baptism hits

Another detail to Tessio was that it is said that while most or all traitors were corresponded with gruesome death mainly mutilation or dismemberment to send out the strongest signal for those in-the-know, Tessio's body was actually preserved intact, all the way to a decent burial.
This appears to be an exhibition of a certain degree of respect and remembrance of his loyalty, particularly to Don Vito.
It was mentioned also that his bereaved family was cared for and supported by Michael.
This is just a strong testament that traitors has absolutely no room in the "family" but you're previous proven loyalty up to that point is enough for your family to benefit for their own future after your own future is erased.

Tessio may have always been the smarter one, but it ended up getting him killed. Best to be loyal.
