It must have stalled out and they were in an emergency landing mode. It glided as far as possible before the forces caused it to twist. Plane can glide with no power for quite a distance. This is very sad.

For those wondering, the ATR 72 crash in Indiana they mentioned was American Eagle 4184 on Halloween 1994. The documentary series Mayday has an episode on it and the changes they made to the aircraft as a result.
