Carl Jung's 9 Rules of Dream Interpretation
In this video, I explore Carl Jung's ideas around dream analysis and dream interpretation. Jung was very open and flexible in approaching the mysterious nature of dreams in his psychiatric sessions with patients. Although there always has to remain an openness to the interpretation of dreams, Jung has outlined quite a few 'rules' that are based on his experience and conceptualization of the unconscious. These dream interpretation rules are like guidelines to keep us from getting lost in the mysterious nature of the unconscious psychic activity - that receive as dreams.

I quit cannabis 51 days ago. I didn’t dream being a smoker but I used to lucid dream a lot as a child. Since quitting weed my dreams have been frequent and very vivid. They last for a really long time like I can remember a good half hour+ span of in dream activity. I’ve realised my dreams are saying so much to me and after writing them down and reflecting on them I’m seeing a pattern of what it’s almost trying to teach me or tell me. As a quick example I’m realising I need to stop putting up a wall and avoiding things that I deep down really want. The reason I’m writing this comment is because I’m coming to the conclusion that dreams are so important, the last couple weeks worth of dreams are making me move a certain direction in life now and if I stayed smoking weed and not seeing the dreams I wouldn’t be going this direction. I bloody love dreaming

Nice vid, thanks for sharing. 9 rules included below:

1. Take dreams as facts
2. Dreams become blurry, so remain humble in their presence
3. Reach mutual agreement and joint reflection
4. Remain open to constructing new dream theories
5. Establish the context of the dream by keeping close to the dream images themselve
6. Take a dream series over a single dream
7. Take dreams seriously
8. Interpretation requires exact knowledge of the conscious status-quo (context of indivudals consciousness)
9. Gain an understanding of mythology and archetypal images

Now that I'm retired, I dream every chance I get. It's like going to the movies, it's free, and I get to participate!

Everyone tries to over understand the dream, Jung says chill out, think about it in a rational way - your mind is presenting you a situation that is testing your choices. Who knows, you can even say God is putting these dreams in your head to test your resolve and morals.

Dreams are my friends. They help digest the conscious and always to my own benefit, like true friends do.

My understanding is we tend to dream in puns. It helps to tell the dream out loud or write it down. It’s amazing how much our subconscious picks up on that we don’t acknowledge. Dreams are unique to the dreamer.

I once dreamed I opened my front door and thousands of flamingos were cueing to enter. Ever since (the dream happened nearly 40 years ago) whenever I see a picture of flamingos I feel the same thrill of joy I did in the dream. I still have no idea what it meant.

Some of this may be true for certain groups of people and individuals but based upon my own experience my dreams have been rooted in different times the past, the present and the future, I know how this sounds the problem is I have had my proof and I no longer look to others for help in those interpretations but only as a recognized recorded moment to give respect for the dreams first and later proof of what usually comes into existence in my conscious real life.
I’m not religious but I can tell you this there is something out there that is far greater in intelligence than we see or have been told about, I’ve been lucky enough to see it and experience it and for my little glimpse into the world unfolding in front of me I am extremely grateful.
There is so much more to all of us if just take the time to listen and appreciate our subconscious.

Great channel. Can't believe how there are so few views of the video. Dreams really do get short shrift. Thank you for trying to bring the focus back to such an important part of psychic functioning (and a key part of the individualtion process, specifically).

I had some, dreams, lottery numbers, someone in the dream told me, , you're a number distance from jackpot, , my mother (she died few years ago) was in my room, with a lot of money and she said just this, , it's for a important cause, ,
Dreamed about seeing the planet from above from space, dreamed a lot of gold...
I try to understand my dreams, I have to because now I'm in a very difficult situation in my life, still I feel that I have succeeded...
I wanted to thank you for this video it helps me understand some of the dreams.

Jung's work on dream analysis has been particularly intriguing to me. The idea that our dreams can offer insights into our subconscious is both exciting and a little daunting. But it's a topic I'm eager to explore more, which is why I'm excited to see other channels diving into this as well.

I've recently had an odd sort of dream, one that I've never had before. The dream sequence in itself was long, which is not at all rare for me, but this time the interpretation of the first dream sort of came up in the second. So in my first dream, I was with my mother and we were both trying to traverse a highway with many lanes. Trucks were running up and down the highway from both directions, and they were very loud and scary. I remember thinking to myself that the loud noise, though frightening to both me and my mother, was as it should be for some reason. My solution as we reached the middle of the highway was to walk along a narrow strip of grass that was positioned under an overpass and in the middle of the said highway. My mother saw a couple of horses grazing on the strip of grass and proposed we make our way forward on horseback (as an aside, I really love horses and I dream of them often). We were walking along on horseback, when my horse, which was a spotted young male, started whining and coiling back its neck as if he was resisting my control. I first told my mother that it was because the horse was still young and unused to the bridle, and then the horse began shrinking to the point I could no longer sit on its back. Mother said that the animal must be thirsty, and there was a river nearby, only it was encased in a thick layer of ice. She showed me how to break the ice and allow the horse to drink, but it was not doing any better and it kept shrinking to the point I could hold it in the palms of my hands. The dream cut to later when I was with my boyfriend in our bedroom, and I remembered I had put the small horse in my backpack in a paper bag and forgot to take him out when I got home. I was really scared it might have died, but it didn't, it still wanted water so I went to the kitchen to give it something to drink.

Now, in the second dream, I actually dreamt I was telling the first dream to my mother - I often tell her my dreams when awake - and she said that the horse symbolizes my sense of self-worth and self-respect and that it was getting smaller as I began doubting myself more and more. It was always thirsty because I don't water it with any confidence, and I always put pressure on myself to make decisions while doubting my capacity to do so. When in trouble, I also reach out to my mother for support.

How valid do you think an interpretation of a dream happening inside the dream might be?

I had a this dream at 16 and I have carried this dream with me to the present (46). This dream holds something important for me and I still can’t figure out what message i’m suppose to see or understand from this dream but I feel deep in my bones i can’t let go of this dream because it has significance even after all these years.
Dream goes like this::: I’m standing in a pitch black, dark room, barefoot and i’m wearing a knee length flowing white dress with little red flowers all over ( I know the flowers are red because it was my favorite dress in reality). I’m feeling content. A stage light appears and stage curtains are drawn( I remember feeling normal, like im in a familiar place). Suddenly the sun appears as one but blurrs into multiple... then back to one. i A man appears on the stage. He has the wire strings attached to him like a marionette. This man was a soldier, I’m almost certain a soldier from WW1 (I don’t know why I think this but I’m certain) His uniform was Olive green with red shoulder patches. He was young, pale olive skin, bitch black hair, and chiseled jaw line .... My words to him “ If you say this prayer you will go back to sleep” and .... that’s it. I woke up.

This was wonderful. Thank you very much, Jared Chan. Your presentation was one of the very best I've ever listened to. The clarity of your explanations and the appropriate quotes from Jung himself opened a door I've wanted to go through a long time ago (though I have no aspirations to become a psychoanalyst). As an aside, I can well imagine why Freud became apoplectic when he read Jung's exposé: It chopped off the lofty (and lucrative) mighty tree trunk Freud was sitting on, and endangered Freud's source of business and, of course, fame, by saying, in effect, 'your Hubris, Dear Freud, has taken over your intellectual and psychoanalytic thinking. Slow down!' Of course, we know that the rift between the two giants, was engendered by Freud who cut off all his ties with Jung. Thanks again. Very well done. I'm looking forward to more of your erudite lectures.
