Lavatools Javelin Thermometer Unboxing and Accuracy Test - Cooking With Denney

I think everyone has one of those Taylor stick thermometers. They work but after using it for awhile I've come to realize that additional features really transforms our experience beyond just having it work. I knew I needed an instant read thermometer but which is really the right choice? The best in class Thermoworks Thermapen MK4 or the more affordable and competitive Lavatools Javelin? The former being twice the cost of the latter.

Here I unbox the Javelin and compare specs to the Thermapen and explain why I chose the Javelin. Later on I test the accuracy of the thermometer and was quite pleased with it.

I just got my Javelin Pro yesterday and tested the accuracy this morning. I was fine that it only got to 32.5 in ice water but I was very disappointed that it would only get to 210 in boiling water. That was in an electric kettle so I couldn’t see the fractions so I’ll try it later in a pan of boiling water. If it gets right up to just under 211 I’ll accept that. But in all the reviews I’ve watched their Javelin Pros got to 212 and 32.

Buyer beware: If your Lavatools Javelin fails during the warranty period, you're out of luck. Even failure from normal wear and tear is not covered. You have to submit an on-line form listing personal details and why you think they should replace your thermometer under warranty. The reason does not matter because they will not reply to your message but have your personal information! They tout "Designed in the U.S. and made in China". Lavatools only has a distribution warehouse in the U.S. and "customer service" is located at their parent Chinese company in Honk Kong. The Javelin is overpriced and lacks features of less-expensive and better thermometer pens such as the Inkbird 1HT-1S which has a real warranty and lifetime service.
