Here's a bit of the email.

Dear Strava community,

.... This means that, starting today, a few of our free features that are especially complex and expensive to maintain, like segment leaderboards, will become subscription features. And from now on, more of our new feature development will be for subscribers – we’ll invest the most in the athletes who have invested in us. We’ve also made subscription more straightforward by removing packs and the brand of Summit. You can now use Strava for free or subscribe, simple.

This focus on subscription ensures that Strava can serve athletes decades from now, and in an up-front way that honors the support of the athletes we serve today. We plan to take what we earn from these changes and reinvest straight back into building more and better features – not devising ways to fill up your feed with ads or sell your personal information. We simply want to make a product so good that you’re happy to pay for it.

Our mission is to connect athletes to what motivates them and help them find their personal best. We mean it now more than ever.

A monthly subscription costs as much as a couple energy bars, and we think that’s money well spent. But we also know, especially lately, that there are athletes struggling to make ends meet and that the free version of Strava must remain high quality and useful. Rest assured that we will always offer a version of Strava for free, and you belong in this community whether you subscribe or not. We’re betting all our chips on you, either way. We hope you’ll bet on us.

We are beyond grateful for your business and your support, and thrilled to recommit ourselves entirely to you, our fellow athletes.

See you out there,
Michael and Mark ........

I'm not a fan of getting used to something then having it taken away like candy from a baby. The rebel in me would rather push thoughts of summit further away. I'm now less likely to try summit.

They should stop with free and only do subscription based but for just $20 a year which everybody can afford and is fair. With this there is more revenue for more and better features.

it makes no sense to give them your valuable data for free and get really nothing back for that.

I think Strava should just go to an advertising model to make money. Kinda like facebook and the rest of the social media outlets out there. Lower the premium subscription price by a buck or 2 (since the adds will bring in some revenue to make up the difference) and remove the adds for those premium members. I hate to say it, but the direction strava is taking right now is not gonna make any difference in increasing the paid membership subscribers in any significant way.

Hey a bit frustrated with your video as you don’t really explain how to use the app for free ie how to avoid being charged beyond the free trial. Could you please clarify? Thank you

The only thing that I'm mad about is that I can't see the leaderboard on small local things. Like where I ride. Come on the leaderboards here are like 15 people at most and it's fun to see my seven local segments in the middle of nowhere which I'm one of the only people who ride regularly here.

Leaderboard is partially free on Adidas app why would I use Strava instead. Now that Strava removed the leaderboard from the free version they might remove more when they want to.

You can now also change your gear on the app (i.e. if you use two bikes) instead of logging onto the website.

I only use strava to see how i stack up against people i follow, will that now be behind a wall payment?

Great summary Tim. I actually noticed last night that I couldn't compare my segment times to people I follow - pretty frustrating but i only do it out of idle curiosity! At least the tracking part is still For now?

I was using training log a lot... just lazy calculating th mk per week. Now I will hand calcul it cuz it's not include anymore.
sucks... their choice.
I won't paid for Strava since I'm using it 10 minutes per weeks, not even.

A good look at the changes there Tim. I subscribed and paid for it about three months back basically to be able to download GPX files from it. £47 a year isn't too bad a cost in my opinion. Other than that I generally use it to track my rides and segments.

Like youTim I just use Strava to record not interested in any of the other features so will not be paying. Shoutout to you from Brum!

I feel like they should have monetized the app with ads in between routes on ur following page and stuff, and having a paid ad free version

On my profile page, it now shows me weekly miles instead of monthly miles, anyone else having this problem? My friend also wants to know so any feedback would be really appreciated. Thanks!

I don't begrudge Strava starting to try and get some kind of income. To run for 11 years without any kind of profit is commendable. They're suggesting that with no change Strava will cease to exist within 12 months ?!?

I am with you Tim
I just use the free side of things on strava.
I will keep an eye on it & if it's not what I want I will look to use something else.
Thanks for the video

Just stopping by to say hi! I had to Google Strava LOL This seems like something my son could use. He just ran 26 miles the other night and is really into fitness ... I'm passing your video long to him!

Are you able to still end up in the top 10 if you don't pay, or is this only for the paid version, and what happens to your previous results, will they stand if you don't pay or will they get lost?
