Casablanca, in my opinion is the best movie of all time, great cast, brilliant dialogue, marvellous song in As Time Goes By . A true classic..

Can't argue with any of your choices but would've thought "To Kill a Mockingbird" would make the list. While often cited for its commentary on the racism of the time it also makes a powerful point on how we once treated those with mental illness or deficiencies. Atticus is the obvious hero of the movie but Boo Radley is the unexpected hero, the mysterious man feared by the local children who saves their lives in the end. Brilliant film making and a wonderful job of telling the story through the eyes of a child. And of course an outstanding performance by Gregory Peck as Atticus.

There is no such thing as the best film of all time or best 20 films of all time, movies are an art form, not a sports team that competes against other teams, they are not in competition with other movies' (except at the box office)because they are all different. You might really love a movie that someone else thinks is a dud. Sports are objective, and there success is determined by scoring more points (or goals) than the other team.. Movies are an art form and all art is subjective, it is all in the eye of the beholder. And they are judged only by the person who watches it either likes it or not.

I watched just now "12 Angry Men". Boy, what a film! A must see.

Great job. I am glad you put "Gone with the Wind" on your list. Present day racial politics should not make people lose appreciation for this classic. It was written back in 1939, when peoples' attitudes were different. It is still an outstanding film.

Master and Commander-The far side of the Earth. No foul language, no women featured, no lovey dovey scenes--pure 'in your face hard living at sea! Fantastic.

Great list. I have seen them all. Perhaps a better title for the list would be "20 block busting films to see before you die" or something like that.
There are so many excellent films that even a list of 100 or more might not include some really fine examples.

The Best Years of our Lives 1947 A fine film devoted to the returning servicemen from WW2. So accurate.
