POST MORTEM: John Landis — Part 2

Director John Landis talks about directing his first film, SCHLOCK (1973), the enduring appeal of horror movies, and making the epic musical-horror short THRILLER (1983) with Michael Jackson.

For my money, one of the best and most effective scenes in any horror film remains the Nazi monster scene in American Werewolf. The whole movie is great, but that scene seems, to me at least, to express something fundamental about the nature of horror. It is the horror film equivalent to the "Funny how?" scene in Goodfellas. It also cements the tone of the film, the complete and utter, and utterly violent, destruction of all that is comfortable and familiar. It tells the audience exactly what kind of film they're watching and that they can't be comfortable or become attached to anything. If someone were teaching a class in horror films they could easily start the first class by just showing that scene and talking about it. Sure, there are scenes of greater violence and horror in other films, but few used so effectively within the context of the whole movie.
