Coyotes are usually skittish, at least in the area I live in. The fact that it was bold enough to not only attack the dog but also the owner is unusual.

My parents let their 25# terrier outside in their fenced in yard in the suburbs. He never came back. They found him shredded in the back yard by coyotes. Coyotes are no joke with small dogs. They lurk everywhere.

I live in an area where multiple people have gotten rabies from wild animal bites in recent years, and several large dogs have had to be put down from getting it via a bite. I applaud his bravery, but also want to remind people to do what you can to avoid getting bitten in situations like this!
