I think another reason why chemical weapons were not used (although even today some conspiracy theorists mention that they were used, and I'm not referring to the torture in the infamous Japanese unit 731 or during the executions in the death camps, using Zykon B on camp inmates who thought they were going to shower, during the Holocaust, that's known..) during WW2, because Hitler personally, "on his skin" felt chemical weapons, during WW1, more precisely right before the end of the war, on October 14 1918.. Then, according to the testimony of the German Imperial Army doctor who treated Corporal Hitler, it was established that Hitler did not suffer serious injuries to his eyes and airways, but he did experience an attack of so-called "hysterical blindness" (caused by great fear, trauma). That trauma seems to have saved humanity from additional suffering and death from the poisons of war and in this much more cruel WW2.

They very nearly were. I used to work with an old guy who was involved with the British chemical warfare group. When the Germans took the forts at Eben Email on the Belgian border it was assumed the had used poison gas, he was called to active duty and there was preparation for chemicals to be used. There was twenty four hours at high alert then they were sent home. Why do you think gas masks were issued to British civilians? They weren't fashion accessories.

The short answer is cus chemical weapons kinda suck. They just werent as effective as the more modern weapons and didnt really have a place in a more mobilized doctrine
