After you helped us fix the SSL/TLS issue a couple months back with your previous video, Mom reformatted her computer again yesterday by chance and we ran into this very problem! Only ran into one issue implementing this solution:

Service pack 2 didn't install the first time (strange error) and I had to reset the computer, but it worked fine after that. Took about 4.5 hours start to finish to get all updates loaded, but Mom's computer appears to be working very well now :) Very thankful you posted this solution, thank you so very much! :D :D :D

Just so people know, Microsoft technically haven't closed Windows Update for Windows 2000, XP and Vista yet. It's just they've deprecated the Windows Update SHA-1 Endpoints that Windows 7 and older relied on. Windows 7 was given a patch by Microsoft so that it would connect the SHA-2 Endpoints instead (like Windows 8/8.1/10 have always used) so Windows Update works again. If someone reverse engineered that patch and made an equivalent patch for Windows 2000, XP and Vista, we'd be able to update those older systems as well.

I only know this because there is a patch for Windows Server 2008 R1 (Windows Vista server edition) which means the server edition of Vista does connect to Windows Update again. Any developers willing to try and make an equivalent patch for older Windows versions?

Please don't reply to this comment if you're only going to suggest unofficial SPs or patching tools. These are almost always not 100% complete and they often contain hidden malware/spyware.

Wow! Fantastic work! My brother-in-law dumped on me a Dell Latitude D620 he wants rebuilt. He's unemployed, and can't afford new hardware. He needs something he can use to write resumes and apply for jobs on-line. The latest this boat anchor can run is Vista, so that's what I'm dealing with. I'm not working to do a restoration - I just want to get this machine to the point where he can be productive, and then hopefully once he's back on his feet, he can buy something more current. I haven't run these updates yet, but I'm sure these will be beneficial to get this machine as up-to-date as it can be.
