Crusades were not because of a Power Hungry Church

Evil and unjust things DID occur during the Crusades.

However they did not occur by intention from the Pope or the Church. The principle reason for engaging in Crusades was to defend the Christian world from Islamic invasion. If the Crusades did not occur, then it would be likely that Europe would be under Islamic rule.

The first Crusade was called after the Seljuk Turks had beaten the Eastern Roman Empire back to the doorstep of Constantinople, had conquered Jerusalem and Antioch, which were two major Christian cities, and were directly threatening to enter Europe. I can explain. The catholic church started the crusade because of a newly emerging nomadic people, known as Arabs. These nomads conquered historic christian homelands, and much more. These arabs commited many atrocities to anyone who was not islam, or refused to convert. The crusades were because of the atrocities and the conquest of core christian lands.
