But the principle behind why the Crusades took place - that was a good thing.

Over 1.4 million people died in the crusades. Christian countries attacked muslim caliphates to stop islamic expansion and restore the christian holy lands. Christian warriors who fought in the crusades were called crusaders as they were attacking. The muslims defended and retook any land that had been taken by the christians in the crusades. When the mongol empire attacked the umayyad caliphate, and when the crusaders conquered spain, the umayyad caliphate collapsed and only the islamic caliphate was left which eventually fell too. The umayyad caliphate was the biggest and strongest muslim empire ever created and the destruction of the umayyad caliphate upon other caliphates is a very big reason why tensions between christian countries and muslim countries are so high and why other wars happened and why millions of deaths occurred both during and after the crusades.

So please, explain to me why the crusades were a “good thing”.
