The fact that the word "surprise" has two meanings here is just interesting af.

First is the fact that it's a name given to the grasshopper because they're "unexpected" when catched and when it has grown.

Then ofc because it's ironic that they're a "surprise" gift for the pet mantis.

He's not lying about how fast they grow.

I remember about 2 years ago there was this grasshopper that hung around my potted plants outside and I saw it everyday for about a week and a half. It was tiny and green. One day, I went out to the plants and it was like four times bigger than what it originally was and this seemingly happened overnight. Like literally, this wasn't a gradual growth, this just happened in like the snap of a finger!

I was terrified
Not only that, but it camouflaged in with my plants, so every time I went out there, I had to look for it before I was even able to touch anything, only to find out that it was right there in my face the whole time.

I caught it and released it somewhere far away from my plants.
